Um, I think you're confused on what "too school for cool" means. It means you're the nerdy ones that are outcasts and never go to the parties and aren't one of the "cool kids". You are too into school to be considered cool.

Because she's saying you SHOULD be partying and celebrating, and fuck all the "cool kids" that exclude you just because you might be a bit freaky or nerdy or gay or whatever. It's about celebrating people who don't fit in.

weeeeell i think when i typed my post i sounded a lot more angry than i meant to?

tbh i may be butthurt because i seriously didn't party when i was high school. i felt like a loser all the time. i wasn't invited. and now (in college) i do party and am of higher social standing (whatever that means), but i feel like hearing this song in high school would have just made me feel shittier. i would not have been receptive to that "YOU SHOULD BE PARTYING LOL" message.

1) I don't think it's about partying. It's called "raise your glass" as in "show respect to/admiration for." It's not literally about fucking DRINKING. I see no evidence for that.

2) "Too school for cool" is a joke line, and not to be analyzed. That's why immediately after she says it, you hear her go "Er, wait, uh..." in the background.

"Raise Your Glass" isn't literally about drinking. You also raise your glass to someone to show respect or admiration - best example, using her own music, was when she raised her glass to the girl in "Fuckin' Perfect".

"Too school for cool" is a joke, a play on a common phrase. She didn't mean it to be overanalyzed or to "become a thing".

Raising your glass isn't necessarily about drinking and partying. In the music video the first person who raises their "glass" is a girl raising a milk carton.

And the whole thing is about how even if you're considered "too school for cool" you shouldn't let that stop you from having fun.

Um, actually we did party. We just didn't do it with the cool kids. And now that we're grown up, we're still partying -- it's just that when we go to the bar, we're wearing ThinkGeek t-shirts, huddling around the lone arcade game, and discussing "nerdy" things. Oh, and coming up with ridiculous schemes.

And ya know, I'm now fondly remembering a party a friend of mine threw back...oh, six years ago? He's now an aeronautical engineer who does math for fun. Most of the people who attended would probably be considered geniuses (and no, I'm not one of them. I'm just a geek). When those of us who crashed there woke up the next day, we were still drunk. And shocked to find a hole in the wall.

I'm also recalling a story one of my stats professors told me. I can't remember the specifics, but the gist is this: one night, a group of MIT students got drunk and decided to measure a bridge near the college using a member of said group (I don't remember his name, so let's just call him Snoot). They spent a couple of hours laying him out, on his back, over and over, until they'd gone the length of the bridge. They then spray-painted said length in units of Snoot where it was sure to be seen by passers-by.

My point? The uncool kids party. We just don't do it in "cool" ways.
