I like the dub too, I'm just sure as hell not going to act like it's flawless. But I loved Dan Green, Ted Lewis and Eric Stuart. My best friends and I bonded in high school (yes high school) over the dub and that led us to look up the original version, which we also enjoy. Sure the script changes were dumb but YuGiOh! DM was one of their better dubs. GX and 5Ds were flat out bad in voice choice and performance.

I know how you feel, anon. Even if it is mostly nostalgic, I love the dub as well, especially for Dan Green, Ted Lewis, Eric Stuart, and Wayne Grayson's performances :) Also, Yu-Gi-Oh was my first fandom as well, so the show has a place in my heart.

I know the feeling, anon. As lame as it sounds, I have to say that I would probably be not the same person I am if it wasn't for watching YGO as a kid. Plus if it wasn't for the dub, we wouldn't have the amazingness that is the Abridged Series.

I don't know, I think you can like 4Kids dubs. A lot of them are horrible, but . . .

Take Pokemon, for instance. I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but I prefer the English 4Kids dub over any other version of Pokemon -- INCLUDING the original Japanese. Why? Because I grew up with it, that's why. I was into Pokemon before I even knew what anime was. I grew up with those characters as Ash, Misty, Brock, Jesse, and James (and of course Pikachu and Meowth). To me, some of the Japanese voices sound horrendous, simply because I got so used to Veronica Taylor as Ash, Maddie Blaustein (RIP) as Meowth, etc. I acknowledge that the English dub of Pokemon had its problems, and I make fun of it on occasion (NOOOO, MY JELLY-FILLED DONUT!!11!), but I still prefer it over all the other versions, and I won't hide that.

On the flip-side . . . I have fondness for the YGO dub, because that's how I first got acquainted with YGO. I never watched it in the original Japanese, because I could only ever find the Hong Kong subs, and -- while they're hilarious (a friend of mine takes screencaps of them and we all make fun of them -- she set up a tumblr for them a little while ago) -- I could never take those seriously. All the same, the YGO dub edited a LOT of stuff out and changed some of the characters radically, to the point where, yeah, they kind of ruined YGO a little. So, for that dub in particular, I have mixed feelings.

And then there are anime like Shaman King and Sonic X that they just destroyed. Granted, Sonic X was horrendous to begin with (goddamn Chris Thorndyke), but still, 4Kids made it worse. At the very least, however, they cannot be blamed for the atrocity that was the Card Captor Sakura dub. That was not their doing.

SO, TL;DR, you can like 4Kids if you want, OP. I guess the rule of thumb is just to not follow them blindly/religiously, but I don't think you do that at all. =) Maybe it's nostalgia goggles, but while I do think they're getting what they deserve, I don't hate them completely.

You know, here I thought Kahn leaving was a sign that they were going to turn around and become awesome. The potential was always there, but his policies were hugely holding them back.

And then I found out that he left so he could get out of a ship only the board members knew was sinking. Goddammit. They could have been so good, but because the executive side was a bunch of self-serving dicks who'd rather lie to people who depend on them than be honest with their money, all that potential is even more wasted than it was in their worst years.
