N!S 1

1) Characterization might be somewhat flexible, but it is not something you can just make up as you go along. Characters have limits. OOC exists.

2) Don't like, don't read is not a rule. It is an excuse. If somebody puts something out for public consumption (like, frex, a fanfic), then negative reactions are one possible result they ought to be prepared for. Cowboy up.

3) What the heck does "Fine, whatever, a lot of the time a character's well..." mean? A character's well what? Dries up during drought season? And what does this character's well have to do with anything, except for drinking water?

Yes and yes. Especially re: 2. Don't like, don't read can work for specific things (like if you don't care for specific types of stories, certain kinks, etc., because that's your own bias), but reviewers shouldn't have to keep a lid on characterization criticism. Now granted, how and to what extent they show it is a different matter completely. I can't say I'd agree with "THIS IS HOW THIS CHARACTER SHOULD ACT AND MY INTERPRETATION IS THE RIGHT ONE." Because then things are just getting kind of ridiculous.

Also, I think they meant it to be read as "a character's characterization," just with a pause, since...character and characterization.

I especially agree with your first point. I think fandom should allow some differences in character interpretation, but OOC means you did something wrong. The line is pretty fuzzy, but when your character is decidedly not the same as the one in canon, that's when it's OOC, and readers complaining about OOCness is never a compliment.

I agree with your points but I can understand if OP is tired of this person constantly being negative. Of course, posting a secret here about it isn't going to do anything.

Also, it is possible for someone to take accusations of OOC too far (mostly in relation to "OMG character a would NEVER do x, y, z or be friends with character b or c").

The well of the thing that makes them who they are! The essence of the being! The lifeforce well that gives to it the meaning!
