It's great this is something you can use for comfort :) I used to do this as a kid, as in always choosing male characters to play because it felt more right. With rpgs, I stopped trying to base characters after myself, and just create characters of any gender to play as. Still, even now where I'm unsure if I want to transition or remain gender neutral, I still appreciate silent protagonists where you're allowed to project your own feelings or id on them.
