Wow, really? I thought it gave a bit more insight from the book that was left out (or perhaps I just failed to catch) in the original.

I mean, I might have agreed with you before I saw it but having seen it, I thought it was a faithful but not redundant version.

What's this movie about?

As a positive there wasn't anything particularly bad about it.

It just seemed unnecessary. It was still good.

I completely, COMPLETELY agree with you, OP. Ugh.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I still enjoyed it.

[identity profile] anamatics.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree here.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that every US remake of foreign films?

[identity profile] socktree.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to like it because he based it off the book rather than the original movie (and I hate remakes with a passion). My roommate and I, however, spent the entire movie saying "WE GET IT, IT'S THE 80S IN AMERICA!"

Too many 80s references - we didn't need to be reminded every five seconds. I'll still with the book/original movie.

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Snabba Cash, Låt den rätte komma in, Millenium trilogin... What's with Swedish movies getting Hollywood remakes all of a sudden? Can't you just watch the originals with subtitles?

Not that I had particularly high expectations going in to begin with, but yeah, it felt redundant. I didn't hate it that much though.

I read the novel, too, and this might be an unpopular opinion but I'm glad the original film pared down so much of the book. There is such a thing as having too much to say, especially if you can't find a way to tie it all together coherently.

[identity profile] apricot-smudge.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! There was the need, maybe, in some, but it was not as had to be, necessarily. Though the one responsible perhaps had a love and wanted to interpret.

I am sorry for your distress! Be well.

[identity profile] shah-of-blah.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't seem to be getting more attention from where I stand (in the US)... I mean, I know quite a few people who saw (and loved) Let the Right One In and not a single person who so much as expressed a desire to see the remake.

[identity profile] phaethon.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed completely. The original is the best vampire movie I've ever seen and a remake was unnecessary.

[identity profile] likeatruck.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagreeing, here. I thought it was fantastic. I'm usually one to opt for the original, but I actually thought it was better - more character-driven, more emotive, and the kids were phenomenal.

Agreed. I loved the book, and liked the film. But I thought the US remake was awful.

[identity profile] venusian-eye.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an American remake???? ... but they even dubbed the original...

What's to hate about the remake, though? I mean, in the book, one of the main characters is outside the gender binary and there's some ~alternative sexuality~ going on, so if they glossed over that I'd understand the rage.

...I adore the original and was very annoyed that they remade it, but do you hate something specific about it, or just on principle? (I mean, have you seen it? I haven't yet, but I plan to, just so I can...know.)

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it's the most pointless remake-- the 1998 version of Psycho is out there, after all.

[identity profile] lule-bell.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
My mum read the book and hated it, she had a really hard time getting through its darker moments and didn't understand the love story aspect to it, but she loved the American movie. I love the book, I love the Swedish movie; I haven't seen the American remake. I'm not opposed to it, per say, I'm just extremely wary of it, especially seeing as how my mum loved it so...

The trailer for the remake led me to the original, which I wouldn't have heard about or watched otherwise.

And Hello to Jason Issacs

[identity profile] spazzer-mctwich.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
is that you Dr. Kermode?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree.

[identity profile] glamourcorpse.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most unnecessary remake?" I think not. Obviously you've never heard about Death at a Funeral 2007/Death at a Funeral 2010. They were even in the same GOD DAMN LANGUAGE!!! **TEARS HAIR OUT** WHY THEY DO THIS ANON, WHY?????

[identity profile] amarielah.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen it, even though I plan to.

In any case, I just don't get this vehement hate of remakes or adaptations at all. Why does anything need a reason to exist? It's not as if this causes the original film, or novel for that matter, to poof out of existence.

You're entitled to dislike it, of course. I just don't follow your reasoning at all.
