I have, actually. (I even purposefully look for fiction with queer female characters, but Kanaya strikes a chord with me like nothing else has.) Which is why it means so much to me, and also why it's a secret, because I knew I'd get this sort of reaction.

nayrt but I think it makes a bit more sense when you specify queer female characters, because I kind of feel the same in that regard. There are a lot of female characters out there that I love dearly and I think are well-written, but at the same time it just reminds me how few relatable and/or realistic queer female characters there are out there.

Not sure if that's what you were going for OP, but if it is I definitely understand somewhat.

I AM PROUD THAT A CHARACTER FROM A SILLY WEBCOMIC ABOUT TWEENAGERS PLAYING VIDEO GAMES HAS CONNECTED WITH THE SECRET MAKER ON SOME LEVEL. THE RELATING TO KANAYA IS PROBABLY DUE TO SOME ELEMENTS OF HER BEING A SYMPATHETIC INTELLIGENT GIRL WHO IS SNARKY WITHOUT BEING CRUEL, CARING AND MOTHERLY WITHOUT IT BEING HER DEFINING TRAIT OR THE ONLY ONE THAT DRIVES HER ROLE IN THE STORY, IS VERY CLEARLY QUEER FROM A HUMAN PERSPECTIVE, AND IS EXCEEDINGLY COMPETENT AND TALENTED IN MANY AREAS, INCLUDING COMBAT, WITHOUT SACRIFICING HER FEMINIMITY.

ALSO, I HAVE IT ON GOOD AUTHORITY THAT SHE IS VERY HOT, THOUGH MY EYES ARE ONLY FOR MS. LALONDE.

THIS IS A DIFFICULT COMBINATION OF CHARACTER TRAITS TO FIND. I THINK OTHER FEMALE CHARACTERS ARE EXELLENT AS WELL, BUT IT CANNOT BE DENIED THAT HIGHLY SKILLED AND COMPETENT FEMALE CHARACTERS THAT ARE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT ARE HARD TO FIND, AND NOT EVERYONE LOOKING FOR ONE WILL FIND ONE. EVEN IF THEY DO FIND ONE, THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING ABOUT THE CHARACTER THAT PUTS THEM OFF, OR MAKES IT HARD TO RELATE TO THEM. MOST FEMALE WARRIORS OF ANY KIND ARE HIGHLY TOMBOYISH, WHICH IS NOT BAD, BUT MIGHT PUT OFF SOMEONE WHO IDENTIFIES WITH A MORE FEMININE PRESENTATION. LIKEWISE, QUEER FEMALE CHARACTERS ARE FREQUENTLY EITHER BUTCH IN PRESENTATION OR OBJECTIFIED AS EYECANDY FOR MEN, WHEREAS KANAYA IS BOTH FEMININE AND NEVER OBJECTIFIED.

There's lots out there, but still way less than the guys. That means that even when you find ones that are fantastic, there is still the hit or miss aspect of whether or not you personally click with them.

Other than being a queer moirail... what in the world is Kanaya's personality? She makes no damn sense to me. One day she's trying to stop Vriska from killing people, and the next she's sawing off Tavros' legs, and also she's a fashionite, but she's largely aloof, etc.

There are so many things going on with her, she never seemed like a realistic, cohesive character to me. I don't get her. I wish I did, since fandom has the biggest boner for her.. but I just don't.

I am, admittedly, a huge fan, but I don't think it's that contradictory, if you pay attention to her and how her character develops?

Kanaya is, essentially, a tweenaged goth girl with a thing for terrible vampire stories and a habit of being mothering towards the people she cares about. She is also (relatively) stable, and has a definite air of doing-what-needs-to-be-done about her.

About the killing and chainsawing: From her very first pages, she has had no qualms about doing what's best for others, in her own view. She slices open her mother's gut minute after she dies, for god's sake, to get the Matriorb. She's madly in love with Vriska... and threatens to overturn a toilet on her head. And when they're all in the veil together, she cuts off Tavros' legs because it's best for him. (There might have also been some latent resentment towards him for Vriska's interest in him-- which isn't terribly reasonable, but she's only six sweeps old and heartbroken.) She shows the same consideration for Eridan, making him a wand to try and make him happy (or at least shut him up).

About the aloofness: as said, she is a baby goth. She tries hard to be sophisticated and romantic and ~ever so mature~ and oh god that girl has a bucket on her head Kanaya is blushing like a wriggler.
She wants to be Dracula and is really more like a Buffy character.
It is incredibly endearing.

And I could go on longer but I am tired and have a headache but hopefully you get some of the idea?

'S cool, we're fans, sometimes we are just compelled to declare our love for fictional characters. And it made me smile, so there's that. She is pretty fantastic. <3

I won't say she's a Mary Sue but there's just no struggle to her character.
Even Tavros has more rugged edges than Kanaya does!

Show me the light, fandom, because I feel like I'm missing out on something great thats just hiding in plain sight

She is a girl and she is queer.

That makes her a very special person to those queer girls in fandom who need a character to relate to (and to some of the... very special men in fandom too, apparently), and complete fucking whitebread to everyone else.

I will say that Hussie knows how to play his audience.

I can understand why you've had that problem, OP - I could probably count the female characters I've found that I could identify with on my hands (as opposed to the number of male characters, which is much larger).

But I very much approve of your eventual choice - Kanaya may not be my very favourite troll (that would be Karkat), but she is amazing and I adore her. XD
