Baccano is too good, I think. It's too complete, too self contained. I am a big fan but I can't see myself ever joining a fandom for it or getting "fannish" about it since the original gives me enough enjoyment that I don't need anything other than to watch it. Drrr! is good but more flawed, and in those flaws your get more potential for shippiness (since the canon!ships of Drrr! are not very interesting) and fanfic (since the canon series becomes so dull).

I'm largely convinced that there is a "sweet spot" on the continuum between "total crap" and "sublime brilliance" where popularity is highest. Highest popularity occurs where ambition exceeds quality, and where the most promising potential remains forever unfulfilled. This creates a gap of longing in people's hearts, and makes them want to fill it. Why is Harry Potter supremely popular, even now? It's not the best children's book series of all time, not by a long shot. But it's hardly anything like the worst. It's a highly entertaining, above-average offering that starts off strong and ends up vaguely disappointing: a lot like DRRR!.

That's actually a really great way to look at it... huh, that makes a lot of sense.

That is a really interesting way to look at it, and it makes so much sense. I never thought about it that way, but now I see that it explains my own fandom behaviour really well. Give me an average children's cartoon with hints of potential and I'll write a novel-length fic about it, but masterpieces like Naoki Urasawa's Monster don't inspire me to create anything.

It's true that the original is so enjoyable and complete (and as far as I'm concerned, pretty much perfect), but there's still room for fanfic and fanart (I've read/seen some), or if not that, at least I'd like to have someone to fangirl about it. But the reason for this lack of fandom activity really is because it's not as popular as it deserves to be. A lot of people dismiss it because from summaries and stuff like that it may not sound that appealing (this was my impression too before watching it, and I've avoided it for a while until I learned that it was by the same author as Drrr, and then I thought hey, it must be good). It's just one of those things that are so much better than it sounds, but most people refuse to believe it, so they don't even give it a chance.

(I'm not OP btw)
