Really? I know nothing about what's more popular than what, but I though Baccano! was one of the best anime I've seen. I didn't even finish Durarara .... it kind of bored me, honestly, so I guess I'm also baffled as to why Durarara is the popular one

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Durarara bored me at the first episode, but I decided to try it out anyway and enjoyed it very much. (Well, that and I wasn't interested in anything else that season...) The characters are just as colourful and imho, I like the DRRR light novels more than the Baccano ones.

Both are awesome, though, and I'm sad that there seems to be a huge lack of crossover fic.

Well, Durarara!! is more hyped because of the recent dub, but I think they're both popular anon D: I know I love both!

[identity profile] vampirenaomi.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never watched Durarara, so I can't comment on that, but I'm also puzzled by why Baccano wasn't a massive hit, at least in Japan. After I finished watching it, I fully expected to find a thriving online community and maybe plans for a second season or something. It was a bit of a disappointment when that wasn't the case.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a mystery for me. Maybe it's because many Durarara characters are teens and fans can relate to them, so it's more popular, while in Baccano! they're mostly adults... (in theory) though Baccano! is still better in my opinion.

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the turn-off from Baccano! results in its first impression as something stereotypically steampunk. People label it without getting past the first episode. Whereas Durarara!! sort of comes off as this edgy urban AU gakuen story.

...and I say this because for the longest time I didn't give b! the same chance I gave drrr!! for this reason

[identity profile] pandapplesaurus.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i saw drrr! first and then saw baccano, and i can honestly say that baccano was a hundred times better. issac and miria took my heart <3 i wish more people knew them...

I still wish Baccano got the attention it deserves.

I don't know either. By the end of Durarara! the only characters I cared about were Shinra and Celty. By the end of Baccano I loved everyone.

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Durarara, but Baccano will remain my favorite anime of all time. I don't know why it's more popular, but I'd say it's because Durarara has a lot more shipping potential than Baccano and attracts a larger fandom that way.

I tried to get into Baccano, because of DRRR in fact, but for some reason it just didn't stick. I bought the second DVD because I found it for three dollars, and while I found it interesting, it didn't leave me feeling like I had to go out and watch the rest.

But maybe I just need to sit down and have a marathon of it someday, like I did with DRRR, and maybe then I will love it. The plot of it really did sounds like something I could get into, but... Idek. I'll give it a second chance someday.

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I did like Durarara, but honestly, I thought Baccano was better.

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed DRRR!!, but I have absolutely no idea how Baccano! doesn't have a fraction of the popularity that DRRR!! does, I also think it's a much, MUCH stronger/better series. (But I'm super biased of course, because it's my favorite!)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Baccano is one of my favorites too, but I always assumed that it just had a hard time finding an audience that resounded with it? With Durarara, it found a huge fanbase in the fujoshi realm and has done really well marketing to them, but Baccano just sort of floated around and didn't attach itself to any particular profitable target audience. I think that if they make a second series, they'll advertise it in fujoshi circles or something to try to grab some of that DRRR audience.

Also, it's really, really grossly violent and gory so that already alienates some people? Like I said, it's one of my faves, but I have a really hard time rewatching the middle episodes because I can't bear to watch the Rail Tracer doing his thing, it's so gross. :(

Baccano is too good, I think. It's too complete, too self contained. I am a big fan but I can't see myself ever joining a fandom for it or getting "fannish" about it since the original gives me enough enjoyment that I don't need anything other than to watch it. Drrr! is good but more flawed, and in those flaws your get more potential for shippiness (since the canon!ships of Drrr! are not very interesting) and fanfic (since the canon series becomes so dull).

I'm largely convinced that there is a "sweet spot" on the continuum between "total crap" and "sublime brilliance" where popularity is highest. Highest popularity occurs where ambition exceeds quality, and where the most promising potential remains forever unfulfilled. This creates a gap of longing in people's hearts, and makes them want to fill it. Why is Harry Potter supremely popular, even now? It's not the best children's book series of all time, not by a long shot. But it's hardly anything like the worst. It's a highly entertaining, above-average offering that starts off strong and ends up vaguely disappointing: a lot like DRRR!.

(Stupid glitches confusing me).
Well, maybe the fact that Durarara! is on crunchyroll helps? I don't know if Baccano is on Crunchyroll (or any other streaming service) in the US. I do know that I can watch DRRR! any time I want, as long as the internet is active, but I'll have to save up to buy the Baccano DVDs (skint student). Also, Baccano is rated 18 here. That might put a few people off.

Baccano! is awesome.

Couldn't get into Durarara

[identity profile] ladyyuna07.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Baccano! is definitely a little harder to follow, I think--but that's just me. I've seen both and I found Durarara easier to follow along. Both are really good series, but Baccano has so many storylines to keep track of.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because the characters in DRRR are hotter.

(I like Baccano more as well)

[identity profile] uncreative-user.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it's probably more popular because of the Yaoi shipping possibilities. Baccano! doesn't really have that, because there are so many confirmed couples in the show.
I agree, though, Baccano! is just... SO much better.

I blame the slash factor for a majority of Durarara's popularity. Someone else mentioned earlier how the anime really marketed to the fangirls, especially with all the Shizuo-Izaya hints. Just look at the merchandise and Animage scans, holy hell!

I also agree that Baccano is the stronger of the two series. But, I think that it might be less popular due to the fact it's a little older, and it's a bit harder to follow. The first episode turned me off the first time I watched it, myself. I imagine it'd draw in more people and the younger crowd if it had a major BL ship in it somewhere, sadly.

[identity profile] silvermedley.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness. I really did try to get into Durarara! but it just didn't click for me. I mean, aside from vending machine hurling. That was pretty great.

Like others have said, it's likely due to the people the series was aimed at. (Also like others said, people love that romance stuff, and Durarara! apparently has quite the potential for that.) Whereas on the other hand, tt's rather hard to pinpoint a group Baccano! would cater towards. Ah, surely those who have a thing for the 1920-1940s ahem, but otherwise it's a bit all over the place.

On that note, another thing working against Baccano! might be its first episode. I know that I personally found it to be rather jarring and confusing, and if it weren't for my group of friends forcing me to watch the rest of the first DVD I probably would've dropped it. First impressions are pretty important and all.

That said, I later bought all the episodes to finish and by the last two episodes (12-13) my heart was exploding with joy.

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I could try and say something about why I love Baccano! to absolute bits, but it would all sum up to: THIS! so I'll just leave it at that.
