I really thought it was being satirical or ironic or something,

Actually, I really like SPN for this. Well, like is the wrong word but . . . they weren't trying to do anything but pay homage to various horror films. And in their genuine, relatively harmless pursuit, they thoughtlessly, clumsily, and inadvertently gave a very boldfaced look at the statement horror, and really, media as a whole is saying: women are victims. It cast a very bright light on that issue, sort of like when you see a little kid swearing? You know adults around them swear. SPN is very much a product of the environment of horror as a whole.

IDK it is funny to me that they set out for the 18-30 male demographic, became a tremendous hit with women, and because it's such a perfect textbook example of misogyny, became a staple in feminist essays about media. Hilarious.

Totally. First I thought it must have been joking, but then it played the women-as-victim thing completely straight. And as a horror fan, I was like, "okay, that's normal in horror, I shouldn't have expected anything else." And it would have been fine (well, not fine, because misogyny is never fine, but I guess less distracting) if the show was scary... But then it doesn't quite succeed in being scary either. So my main gripe with it is that it's so misogynistic with no real horror to make up for it. Boo.

And yeah, its popularity with both fangirl demographic and feminist-rage demographic blows my mind.
