I think what you're trying to say is that we need something to believe in. We don't find it in real life, so you come to the conclusion that we obsess with fandom because we use it, characters in it, plotlines in it, or whatnot as a substitute.

However, A) plenty of people with faith are just as obsessed with fandom as those without it, B) not everyone is as obsessed with fandom as you think they are, or you may be yourself, and C) not all of us use it as a replacement 'drive' like you think we do, or you do yourself. It is entirely possible to believe in yourself and have goals and dreams without relying on outside sources like religions or tv shows or politics or whatever generic 'faith.'

That and D) fandom is fun.

I think it's possible to use fandom as a faith as well as an accepted religious faith. Polytheism works even if one deity happens to have been created for TV/book/film etc.

In before anon telling me that the god of every major religion is made up too.
