I know. If I could only find faith, I wouldn't be having sex, listening to rock and roll, or drinking alcohol either. Where are you god(s)? Save me from myself.

I'd like to know why you are so convinced of this, because I know MANY people in fandom who have a perfectly good level of faith in their particular religion.

see i don't mind people having faith or being religious, so long as they don't oppress or hurt others or shove it down other people's throats

you're annoying

go away

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What.
Lack of faith is what makes people go into fandom? Oh, my bad. I was over here thinking so many people were into fandom because they liked a show/movie/videogame/manga/book/whatever a lot, so they wanted to talk to others who liked it too, and maybe write fanfiction or draw fanart or start discussion for said thing they enjoy and present it to said other fans for feedback and appreciation.

Sorry, I must be doing it wrong.

I would also like to take this time to point out that you can have faith without being religious.

"In the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship." -David Foster Wallace

As a former Catholic atheist I agree completely. It's the driving question behind a lot of my artwork these days.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-13 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So all those devoted Christians who created what is in essence fanart and fanfiction about Biblical characters and saints and martyrs... were so into fandom because they didn't have faith?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-13 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what you're trying to say is that we need something to believe in. We don't find it in real life, so you come to the conclusion that we obsess with fandom because we use it, characters in it, plotlines in it, or whatnot as a substitute.

However, A) plenty of people with faith are just as obsessed with fandom as those without it, B) not everyone is as obsessed with fandom as you think they are, or you may be yourself, and C) not all of us use it as a replacement 'drive' like you think we do, or you do yourself. It is entirely possible to believe in yourself and have goals and dreams without relying on outside sources like religions or tv shows or politics or whatever generic 'faith.'

That and D) fandom is fun.

[identity profile] xxsomeoneelsexx.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, I think I get what you're saying, and I sorta see how you could come to that conclusion, but on the whole I'd say there is no connection there. People whose fandom is their faith represent only the unhealthy extreme.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I...well, OK, interesting point: I mean, hundreds of years ago, more people were extremely religious because we didn't have as much scientific knowledge and so they thought that, like, thunderstorms were God being mad at them or whatever. And now we have a lot more understanding of the world, so there's fewer extremely devout people in general (although there are still plenty, to be sure), but most of the "fiction" back in the day (i.e., stories, poems, songs, art) were based around those religious ideas/figures/'explanations' of natural phenomena, so now that we have literal understandings, we need other types of creative outlets and fantasy...yeah, I totally dig this! Man, I actually kinda miss being in school; I'd so write a paper about this. [/nerd]

(Damn, these other comments are harsh! I too am not at all personally religious, although I am really interested in theology from an academic perspective. I did not get the impression you were saying "Y'ALL ARE HEATHENS AND NEED JESUS," y/n?)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. Humans are hardwired to want to look up to someone/something greater than themselves. If they can't find a deity that makes sense to them, fandom is the next best thing.

Of course it's not the only reason people get into fandom, but I think it's why you see a higher % of non-religious people here than in the general population.

(ftr, I'm agnostic and this definitely applies to me.)

Replacing one idol (God or gods) for another (celebrities and fictional characters). The question is why do we do it? Why do we have a need to place something above ourselves or at least obsess and worship? Actually, that would make an interesting thesis paper.

[identity profile] nadinthedreamer.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
NO.
That's because most people have to have something to be obsessed about. Religion, god, fandom are only objects of obsession.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny. I thought the boom in fandom just came from the fact that the internet came into existence, and becomes more and more easily accessible everyday, allowing more and more people of similar interests to connect with one another. Silly me.

I think I get what you're getting at (replacing religious faith with fandom), and there could certainly be an argument made that fandom acts to build a sense of community in the same way religious institutions often do/did. And I'm sure there's a lot to be said about the way fandom interacts with stories in relationship to the way myths used to/do operate.

But as for fandom acting in the place of faith... Well, maybe it does for some people. That certainly isn't how I feel about it though.
