I think the opposite...
(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)I believe that religion was/is fandom. You have the canon. You have the fanfiction. My, do you ever have the fanfiction. You have the obsessive geeking over trivia, detail, meaning, interpretation, direction, what happened, what it means. You have the AUs and the retcons and always that one part of the fandom who refuses to accept that one part as canon. You have the filksongs and the conventions, even.
Seriously, where else is the word "canon" used in that meaning? Law, and religion.
(And I do not mean this flippantly. They really do share a major number of traits as social constructs. It's just that when people start trying to live by the tenets of their fandom, the reactions range from "that's nice" to "edging away now.")
