Fellow atheist to fellow atheist: I see it too, but I don't see that that makes fandom a bad thing. The world is cynical and disaffected, and the world is fragmentary with no One True Cultural-Monopoly Faith to turn to by default. And the first one means that people who care about things need somewhere to go when they're caught between frat-boy fucks who think it's uncool to be really into anything and hipster fucks who are too postmodern to care about anything, and the second one means that sometimes fandom is what they turn to as an object of devotion. Fandom is an outlet for faith in a society that all too often frowns on wholehearted enthusiasm, and whose religious institutions have all too often failed us.
