I think I get what you're getting at (replacing religious faith with fandom), and there could certainly be an argument made that fandom acts to build a sense of community in the same way religious institutions often do/did. And I'm sure there's a lot to be said about the way fandom interacts with stories in relationship to the way myths used to/do operate.

But as for fandom acting in the place of faith... Well, maybe it does for some people. That certainly isn't how I feel about it though.

--Atheist who does have faith/belief in some things (though not religion/god(s), obviously), but not fandom realted things

Also, even though I do think there are arguments to be made about the ways in which fandom does or doesn't fill some of the same functions as religion, I don't think its popularity is particularly correlated to people's religious faith or lack thereof. I think, for example, fraternities and sororities also act in similar ways (even more so), and are still plenty popular in areas where people are also religious.

I said upthread but can't remember where, I can see it being some sort of polytheism, even if people don't frame it as such consciously.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an interesting thought. I also just generally think that there is a distinction between the social role of religion and what faith means for people on an individual level. Thus, fandom might be operating socially for someone in similar ways to, say, their church community, even though they only have personal faith in the Christian god, and not in characters from their fandom/their fandom's creator/whatever else fandom related.

--Misses religious theory classes

I agree about the distinction between the social and the individual roles of religion and faith, but I'm part of that generation who grew up believing fervently that I'd get my Hogwarts letter, and the personal gratification, for want of a better word, of that belief was similar to that of the more conventional religious belief.

I could be am weird though, and my experiences may be non-typical.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. I think it totally might/does operate that way for some people. I just think it doesn't for as many people as the OP seems to think.

-- Also of that generation, but didn't actually think I was going to get a Hogwarts letter. (OTOH, I do absolutely, unequivocally believe that there is other life out there, which, while not directly fandom related, is clearly related to the fact that I brought myself up on sci-fi. And I realize that. But I still believe it, damn it)

this is a very excellent and true comment =D

Thanks :) (As a former film and religion studies double major I have so many thoughts about the intersection of media, myth, religion, institutions, community, culture, etc etc. But I think that, at least in most cases, saying that media operates in the exact same way as, or as a direct replacement for faith in a deity isn't really accurate. They can be similar, but not that same).
