... Maybe for some but not for me as of this moment. I mean I may be an ex-christian/atheist. But I'm not worshipping Aang just because he's kung-fu action Jesus.

Stories and media in general is a two way street though. They can be shaped by us- in what we create ourselves and how we interpret those provided to us- but also we in turn can be shaped by them in a sense- whether it's from what we liked or disliked about the story. This could be said to be the same with regards religious stories. The difference is though of course while for a moment in seeing/hearing/reading a story we can 'believe' it or in a character (or say magic and other things which do not in fact exist) deep down we, or at least most of us, know it isn't real. Religious beliefs however don't exactly stop after we've closed that book or stopped watching a movie/show or outside opf discussion with other 'fans'. Religion and the beliefs attached are therefore pretty different. Plus of course it would be strange if everyone went through different religions at the same rate the average person goes through fandoms probably. Interesting but weird. I know you get some people which perhaps act like they worship a character but they're kind of far between yeah (you know the astral plane marriages etc.)? Even with extreme wank though in general- they're not real. I mean they can be admired and others can be even hated to a strange degree certainly and sometimes some can forget they're not real for a moment or in the heat of wank- but certainly if you sat someone down after they calmed down they'd admit they weren't REAL- which is different compared to belief in a deity. I suppose it could work as a subditute though for some maybe. And fandom does seem to have its fair share of secular/non-religious people. But it's of course not exclusive and there are people of various faiths in fandom.

In my case years back- while I wasn't in fandom precisely, I first got into fantasy and my own stories in my head to (at least I think) subconciously escape the god I thought was of course real for a bit. It was a relief. Honestly fantasy which I deep down knew wasn't real sort of helped me hang on when the nightmare I thought -was- real got too much. So make of that what you will. Granted I think a lot of people 'escape' reality now and again (or in my case how I viewed reality). I mean it isn't always roses after all. So in a sense it can also be a comfort to go to for a bit which... religion can be for some people.

Anyway an interesting thought OP and while it's not precisely on the money in my view it is a potential source of interesting discussion.
