Never seen the TV series, but I do love the manga series VERY much.

I have a love/hate relationship with this series in all of its forms, though I quite enjoyed most of the manga. My biggest problem is that I feel the series tries too hard to make me feel sorry for Miyu. I don't sympathise with her and am often more interested in the minor characters of each story, so it irritates me that the series sometimes treats these characters as if their pain didn't matter because Miyu is suffering more.

And I find the whole Miyu/Larva relationship too creepy for my tastes. I have no idea if there are actual feelings involved there or if Larva is only loyal to her because of the blood bond, which would be too much like slavery in my eyes.

Plus, the whole "your life is horrible now, but I can give you an eternal dream" thing is too much like suicide to me. Every time, I wanted the angsting person to say no, that they wanted to go on with their life even if it hurt, that they wouldn't give up. I was always so disappointed when it didn't happen.

This got longer than I meant to. I actually don't know why I've spent so much time and money on this series when I have so many problems with it, but something about it just keeps drawing me back. It's a great thing to watch/read when you're in the right mood, and I love the unsettling feeling it gives me when there are no happy endings.

This is one of the reasons I was so upset the company publishing the manga went under. In the "New Vampire Princess Miyu" series, it really explores their relationship and shows that, yes, they do care for one another. I would give an example, but I don't want to give spoilers if you don't want.

Personally, that's why I love them. I only really like heroes who have something morally ambiguous about them.

Aaaaand I could defend them all day (well, Miyu and Larva at least), but I doubt anyone's interested. So. Yay Miyu secret!

WHOA blast from the past anime!

I watched that entire series when I was in high school (and thus therefore better able to appreciate narcissism as a character trait?), and this secret made me realize that I felt exactly the same way about it.

Also, I didn't like it that the sexy dude's name was "Larva." Especially because the pronunciation of said name in Japanese is all sorts of lolwut.

I didn't like Larva's name either (all I could think about was bugs! yuck!), until I came across this:

Larvae: A name used to describe evil spirits of the ancient world, onetime mortals who returned to wonder the earth and bring torment upon the living, esp. during the Roman festival of Lemuria each May. (The Vampire Encyclopedia)

So, when one also remembers that Larva's companion before Miyu was named Lemures...it's hard for me to ignore that and I actually give the creator props for doing research!

But I will agree, it does sound weird in Japanese :-)
