You are so not alone, anon.

You know, I don't think you are. I'm sure the homoeroticism was deliberate.

[identity profile] yvw.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thaha, I can guarantee you you sure weren't the only one who caught on this. I watched the film on a guys n' fast food night and after the soap scene one of the guys turned to the others and said "did I just imagine that or...?" and received vigorous nods from them.

Shipper represent here.

The homoeroticism was deliberate - read the book.

[identity profile] freak-of-spade.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here to say the exact same thing.
Also, Anon, you're not alone. The soapscene is about thirty thousand different shades of sexy.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
glad I am not the only one who found this hot.

I know I'm trying to take the easy way out here, but I doubt I'll get round to reading the book (who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself). What's this about the intended homoeroticism? You don't have to say, but you've made me very curious.

I feel like most people had this reaction. I don't think the homoeroticism was unintentional.

[identity profile] yanjara.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I've heard/read the homoerotic undertones were there deliberately. IMHO the book is in some ways far more explicit with this.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
i can never find fic for this movie! it always frustrated me cause of how homoerotic and hot it was.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure it was meant to be read that way. In the book at least the Narrator goes on and on about how he's in love with Tyler.

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
dw. if it wasn't supposed to be about that op, they wouldn't have casted brad pitt.

Oh god, the soap scene. I wonder what it is about that, but yeah, that definitely had me shipping it. Despite later revelations. Whatever, I don't care.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally see "I missed the point of this movie" as proof that you did. I see this entire movie as a struggle between living free of the obligation to conform to society's views of what is normal or acceptable. This movie makes a point of putting sex in the most unappealing of terms, and making the most unexpected things sexy. I think Brad Pitt -- er, Tyler? :V -- would be proud of you, OP. Of course, Jack would shun you in an attempt to alleviate his own empathy...

TL;DR: Good for you. Who gives a fuck if it's "strange and twisted," it's so damn good! And nobody got hurt in the process. :D HAVE FUN.

Well, Chuck Palahniuk, the novel's author, is gay, and the book has plenty of homoeroticism, too. So a certain amount of it had to be intentional. I didn't get turned on by the soap scene, but I loved Narrator and Tyler's buddy-buddy moments together.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Him being gay doesn't necessarily mean that the Tyler/Narrator subtext was intentional- not all dude/lady relationships in books by straight people were intended to be seen as sexual.

But yeah, I think he totally meant it to be there X3

HEY EVERYBODY TYLER DURDEN AND THE MAIN CHARACTER ARE THE SAME GUY~

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's not unusual. At all. I don't know anyone who enjoys male/male pairings and didn't ship it at least a little, up until the spoiler at least. The spoiler made me ship it more. I am a terrible person :D

Its one of those 'twists' that everyone already knows.

It was his sled, he is luke's father, she's actually a man, etc.

[identity profile] damion_starr.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I was shipping this so hardcore from the very beginning. I was planning fic by the end. The revelation devastated me for like two seconds. Then I decided to ignore it. ^_^ I loved the little bashful look on the Narrator's face when Tyler kissed his hand, like he was confused, but so excited.

I read an interview with Chuck about the book, and he said that he hadn't planned out the ending, but when he was getting there he realized "hey, they're [Narrator and Tyler] basically the same person", thus the ending we know came about. I'm fairly certain that wasn't the first thing he considered when trying to write the ending, but that's just my little conspiracy theory.

And the HOMOEROTICISM!!! *drools*

ooh girl
it's totally not just you. 90% certain it was written that way. The book is even shippier!
