Having trouble telling fiction from reality isn't because of a good imagination.

That's another problem entirely.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, um, this.

I basically spent the span of a year in an intense paranoid delusion, until I figured a way to think myself out of it. The imaginative part did contribute to the events that took place, but... the cause was because at the time I was dipping my cup into the crazy well in Paranoia town, not just because I had an ~active imagination.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I should have phrased it better. I know that the things I see that scare me aren't real. I know the boogeyman doesn't really exist but I still jump at the shadows, you know?
Really it just makes me extremely paranoid for up to a few weeks, but it seems to differ depending on what I see.
The Mummy, Jurassic Park, and Scream didn't scare me or make me paranoid for example, but when I saw Lady in the Water those evil grass dog things had me terrified to walk to work for nearly a month.
But I will admit you're right on some respects, and I am taking medication to help with the paranoia/anxiety already. But imagining Dean and Sam and the rest of the crew hunting down the monsters that make me more paranoid seems to help calm me down a little. Idk, It's pretty strange.

[identity profile] bouncy-erbear.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have this problem to the extent that you do but I am a HUGE scaredy cat and do not do well with horror movies.

However, I am pretty sure that having watched SPN helped me make it through Paranormal Activity without ending up like the girl a few rows behind me who was curled up in her seat and would not leave the theater. (I still lost sleep for several nights sleeping with my lights on though).

I guess what I'm saying is, I get what you're talking about anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeahhhh, me too. Don't like horror movies. Don't deal well with them. I recall seeing some horror movie when I was like 14 (I think the Japanese Grudge maybe?) and falling asleep at 3 AM that night. With the lights on. Clutching a two-by-four in my hands and staring at the door. Not even joking a little bit, unfortunately.

But I don't think that they're real. I mean, I have an active imagination and I entertain the notion of them being real, and it worries me - but in the light of day one surely knows that they're not real. Or maybe I'm a crazy person for taking this stuff that seriously.

You're braver than me, then. I can't stand even the commercials for it. The 'found-footage' feel scares me half to death.

[identity profile] asphyxiational.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're just starting it, the first couple of seasons are much scarier than more current episodes. There are still a few occasional scares, but nothing to the degree of some of the earlier episodes, imo.

Anyway, I'm glad SPN is helping you with your paranoia!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I get creeped out by the ghosts, demons, and apocryphal stuff, because I'm not entirely sure they don't exist. Damn religious upbringing. I hope you find a way to overcome your fears, anon.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... while it's great that you're feeling more comfortable, and this is helping you, you should probably look into getting help for your paranoia, and possibly some other issues. I don't mean that to be rude or anything; I have my own psychological issues. I just think it would make you feel better during your life.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I take no offense.
I am starting to take anti anxiety medication for other issues and they seem to be helping the paranoia too. It comes and goes at least.
>>;;; My doctor is trying to get me to see a therapist, actually, and it was the panic attacks I had at just the thought of seeing one that made her prescribe me the medication.
I am looking into my options, but its the giant elephant in the room as far as my family is concerned.

I have a huge, sometimes uncontrollable, imagination too. But I watched SPN and couldn't help but laugh and go What the hell?! It's just too ridiculous.

Note: I've only seen a handful of first and second season, because everytime I try to get into it I just end up laughing and rolling my eyes. Maybe it gets scarier later?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't get scarier, but it gets more 'serious' (as in more plot, less 'silly monster of the week') The plot is still sometimes silly, but I overall find seasons 3-6 less ridiculous than seasons 1-2 because it focuses on bigger things than just killing a random ghost in a random house.

[identity profile] roaringmay.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love SPN but it scares me... a lot. I always have some rock salt next to my bed now. You know, just in case.

[identity profile] jewelia13.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound like me, lol. :) I'm usually always wearing some form of silver jewelery. What can I say, it makes me feel better.

I don't watch a lot of horror stuff, since I'm easily scared, so getting through the first season of SPN was pretty hard for me. Now it doesn't bug me because it's more gore than anything, and I can handle violence.

Also, re: the last bit -- I know how you feel. With me, it's more with Harry Dresden. I'd like to think he's out there, helping people.

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I have somewhat the same problem, but only with things I know can happen in reality. Which is why I can't watch Saw movies.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What season are you in? Season one and two are much scarier than the later ones (though they get an occasional moment in), so maybe it'll help when you're through with them, or you can watch with a friend and make them fast-forward through scenes.

I only ever got a few episodes into the first season of Supernatural because it freaked me out. I kept forcing myself to watch, because my brother loved it so much and he and I usually have corresponding taste, but I got as far as the Bloody Mary episode and was like, nope, can't do it, done.

So, while I don't get where you're coming from as a coping method, I do get the extreme over imagination and fear that permeates after watching something. Glad you found something that helps you cope, though :D.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think those who said the scares in SPN are cheesy lied. Maybe cheesy isn't the right word, but to me they always felt like "over the top making fun of cult horror film monsters," type of scares. Very rarely have any of them truly scared me, mostly because they never went for the kind of f*d up, psychological mind bend that some (mostly obscure) horror movies do.

It's a great show, and it's too bad that the scare factor turns a lot of people away. Good on you for sticking with it.

[identity profile] yogurtpo3.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I found Supernatural rather therapeutic. I used to be petrified of scary movies, and I'd get nightmares for weeks after seeing one. But then I got into Supernatural, and the next time I saw another scary movie, I just imagined Dean and Sam blazing in with their rock salt shot guns and generally looking hot as all hell while calling the evil spirit/monster/ghost whatever a whole host of degrading names... needless to say, I was no longer scared, nor had any bad dreams afterwards! XD

When I started watching, it scared me. But the more I watched, I more I got used to the things they were doing, until it stopped being scary for me. Kinda weird.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Um...What you have is not a "wild imagination", it's a mental illness.

I think that's sweet! also, don't feel bad, that show IS scary. Less so in later seasons, but dude - I LOVE horror movies, that's one of the things that drew me to the show, and I still get freaked the fuck out occasionally. My friend Waldo and my brother both watch it too (both straight as arrows, jfyi) and the reason is because they both love scary shit too.

[identity profile] a-phoenixdragon.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs you tight*

I like to think they are out there too, fighting the good fight and making the world safer for us all.
