Seriously, there are are people that do this? I have Aspergers, but don't try to be an asshole, much less use the disorder as an excuse.

Oh yes, they exist, and it exists on TV as well, where being a rude jackass is explained away as AS. See: Parenthood

I once knew someone who self-diagnosed with Aspergers and a couple of personality disorders and claimed they were why he couldn't go to school, then couldn't get a job, and that he'd be stuck like that his whole life because it was just the way he was.

It makes me more sad than anything, since he has no drive to like... Do stuff.

My little brother was (actually) diagnosed with Aspergers, and my mom was diagnosed with Aspergers, and my mom seems to have embraced it in that way, particularly as it relates to my brother. Now doesn't really object if he doesn't want to do anything other than sit around and play video games or if he throws tantrums over stupid things, because "It's the Aspergers!" She pretty much made it his entire identity. And thus my little brother has become completely intolerable.

She's convinced I'm on the spectrum too, supposedly when they were explaining it to her she was like "Whoa - that's just like [me]!" - and I was already kind of suspicious after reading up on it before that... but it's stuff like that that doesn't make me want to know for sure. I'm very much at peace with my weirdness, whether it's due to a disorder or not, and I don't ever want to be tempted to turn into one of those people.

I've come across quite a few people who've done this. It's incredibly aggravating. It got to the point where a few other friends of mine who also were diagnosed with Asperger's were calling the "excuse" people out on their BS. :/

I actually had people not believe me because I seemed "too nice of a person". Yeah buddy, it's called "trying to live like a normal person".
