This. This. THIS.

I've met real Aspies. They are usually very sweet people who don't quite 'get' social ques and what may or may not be acceptable in a certain situation. Sometimes you can't even tell and just mark them off as being awkward.

These self-diagnosed 'aspies' are just trying to find an excuse to be annoying and rude. They exist all over the internet and unfortunately, this means they show up at conventions, too. =/ It's like the new 'ADD/ADHD'.

Being self-diagnosed and being a 'real' aspie are not exclusive, fyi.

Most of the 'real' officially diagnosed aspies start out self-diagnosed. Many others can't afford to actually see a psychiatrist and get it confirmed, and to claim that someone only genuinely has AS if they've had a professional diagnosis is kind of classist.

:) Saw this right after I posted my comment below! I agree completely. I remember one ASD diagnostician quoting me several thousand (UK) pounds just to spend a few hours filling out the same clinical scales you can do for free online. Not to mention how few people are willing even to consider testing adults for ASDs.

But I didn't say that, now did I? 'Real' implies that they actually have it, not necessarily that they've been diagnosed by a professional.

Go make your assumptions somewhere else.

"to claim that someone only genuinely has AS if they've had a professional diagnosis is kind of classist."

You can't diagnose a condition yourself, you need a professional to come to that conclusion.

Reading about it on the internet and then saying "Aha! That sounds like me, so therefore I must have that condition" is self-diagnosis, aka not a real one.

It has nothing to do with being "classist" -- doctors, psychiatrists and other professionals exist for a reason

THIS. The first college year of psychology students is full of people who self-diagnose conditions they do not actually have...
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not only that, but let's say you do feel your self-diagnosis is an actual diagnosis. Then what? You still have to see a professional to actually do anything about the condition you have.

I only took the one psych class, but I remember on day one our professor quoting from something I can't remember and saying "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that pretending to have AS in order to be rude is completely not ok, but not all self-diagnosed Aspies are like that. There are a lot of them around, but by no means all. Getting a formal diagnosis is a long, difficult process (in lots of countries, at least), and often expensive, especially for adults - there are some folks who do all the research they can for themselves, and reach a genuinely informed opinion, which they then get confirmed by professionals when and if possible. I know quite a few self-dxed Aspies who're just trying to understand themselves, and feel better having a name for their problems. They might be mistaken about having AS, but they're not necessarily trying to use it an excuse (but I agree there's a lot of that around!)

[identity profile] lurksinclosets.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, where in my post did I mention professional diagnosis? You seem to have been more polite about it than the previous reply, though. I made the ADD/ADHD comparison for a reason - out of all the self-diagnosers, how many actually have it? Answer - very few.

Also, people who have self-diagnosed but might actually have it don't go around telling everyone that they have Aspergers and therefor have an excuse being an annoying dick to everybody.

'Real' implies that they actually have it, not necessarily that they've been diagnosed by a professional.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
It was where you said: "These self-diagnosed 'aspies' are just trying to find an excuse to be annoying and rude." I assumed you meant *all* self-diagnosed aspies, but maybe you meant just the ones the OP was talking about? In which case, I apologise for making that assumption!

[identity profile] lurksinclosets.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that why I wrote it 'aspies' instead of Aspies; implying that they are not actually Apspies.

Maybe I just suck at communicating on the internet. It seems like everything I say is taken the wrong way, no matter what the subject. orz

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
My mistake!
