I'm kinda starting to wonder whether a lot of people in fandom really DO have aspergers. I mean why should this many people lie? Or am I being overtly naive?
I don't know, I just don't think this many people would just for the heck of it.

...and yes, before anyone asks I have been on the Internet before.

Probably because fandom is something that's easy to get fixated on, and dealing with fictional people is much easier than dealing with real people. It's reasonably safe.

Obsessive interests :) It used to be a common joke that people with AS were all train-spotters - now they're all in fandom ;)

Seriously though, the internet is a great vehicle for people with ASDs to communicate without the same kinds of stressors as public socialising, so it wouldn't be surprising to find a much greater preponderance of AS among people who spend a lot of time online.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah there is that. Everyone is just as into what you are in as you are, no one can see any of your odder tics and body language, and no one expects you to "read between the lines".

The internet in general is great when it comes to being social without having a) time limits on your response and b) worrying about anything but the words you use. We all look a bit Aspie, even the people who aren't.

Conventions can actually be great too- mainly for the fact that I've never ran into anyone who's given me a weird look for being so obsessed with certain subjects.

"internet is a great vehicle for people with ASDs to communicate without the same kinds of stressors as public socialising"

See that's exactly what I thought when I read that. I don't know about conventions, but it does seem logically for people with a diesease that makes them socially awkward to be drawn to the internet.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Because being able to pin your anti-social traits on something that isn't your fault means that people can feel good about themselves without putting in the effort to fit in.

Of course people with real AS work damn hard to fit in, because, you know, we want to be able to keep friends and have jobs.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of a combination. Yes, there's a lot of people with Asperger's in fandom, for two reasons - it's online (thus minimising face-to-face contact and non-verbal communication), and because of the 'obsessive interests' thing. A lot of the time, this is for something with a fandom, so getting involved in that is an awesome way to indulge in this interest, and to do so in a safe environment.

But that's a double-edged sword. With more visibility in fandom for people with Asperger's, there's also straight-out jackasses who go, "Oh hey, trouble with social interaction! That can TOTALLY be an excuse for me being a douchecanoe towards people!" Which, ironically, actually makes the real Aspies less visible, since, aside from discussions like this, we're a lot less inclined to actually mention it to people for fear of people saying, "Oh, you're just one of those douchecanoes using it as an excuse". Agh ;_;

Because people in fandom are desperate to be special snowflakes, but aren't really up to lying outright, so they convince themselves they have Asperger's, or are asexual, etc.

The real percentage of people who ACTUALLY are these things is so so so much lower. Even in fandom.

Seriously, 90% of them are fake special snowflakes.

Hate on this comment all you like, the truth hurts.

[identity profile] october-miss.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you so hostile? I do think that there is some truth to your comment, but considering how much people who admit that they have aspergers get mocked these days, I highly doubt that they can ALL be lying.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I actually do have it, but am terrified to ever even mention it because of how easily and often it's mocked.

[identity profile] october-miss.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably best not to mention it to anyone, unless you know and trust them... It sucks, but if it terrifies you this much, then yeah that's pretty much the only option you have :/ Just know that not everyone is douchebag and try to find those people :)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
....You know that's basically what everyone's been saying the entire conversation? Just without the grossly exaggerated statistics.

[identity profile] october-miss.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry anon, are you talking to me or the anon that I answered too? It's hard to tell :)
