I know it happens, but these kind of discussions make me all sorts of uncomfortable because it just brings out the people who don't believe a mental disease is real or think they are allowed to diagnose other.
Don't let anyone be an asshole to you, but be kind back WHATEVER their condition, I guess that would be my advice.

I may be wrong here, but I suspect this can be inferred nonverbally. Iif you're at a convention, you have the advantage of seeing the person face to face, allowing for body language observation. Those with any sort of high functioning autism (Asperger's, PDD-NOS, etc.) can misjudge how to make good eye contact, swaying between missing the other person's face and staring in an intense manner. Those who self diagnose (especially with malevolent intent) will have somewhat better judgment of proper eye contact. Another thing in person contact can reveal is where the person positions him/herself in the area. Self diagnosed may act as if they don't do well in crowds but are not as afraid of getting into the thick of it. Meanwhile, those who actually have autism will position themselves in a space that cuts down on stimuli but still allows for observation of other events. This doesn't always have to be at the fringe of the crowd. I know that when I've been in large crowds I'd sometimes step over to merchandise booths just to get a breather but would still be able to watch what else was happening. Keep in mind these things are deducted from my experiences as someone who was diagnosed PDD-NOS (or atypical autism; it keeps changing names on me), and I've had to read books on body language to get anything that resembles a clue when it comes to in person behavior. I suspect meuro-typical people will be better able to detect when someone who self diagnoses slips in their act.
As for on the internet, that is more difficult, but I'd say word choice and the timing of their responses are key. Oddly enough, I have an easier time detecting tone changes in online correspondence than I do in actual conversation, so I have a better chance of determining if someone is serious, trolling or joking. That doesn't mean I'm right all the time, but the odds are slightly more in my favor.
