It seems awfully likely, though. Idk, at first I didn't want Germany to be HRE all grown up because I didn't like HRE much, but now I don't mind if it does turn out they're the same person.

Weeeeeell, based on the available evidence of HRE looking exactly like Germany, and the historical basis of what the HRE actually covered (i.e. Germany and some bits), I think you may well be disappointed.

Huh. This is an interesting perspective! I've always had a bit of a soft spot for HRE is Germany, but I feel the same way about the "FIRST LOVE = ONLY LOVE" trope.
Probably mostly because I didn't really have a childhood sweetheart. We all just hung out and were cool in an aromantic sense. Which is what I had assumed most children did.

Agreed. Though, as others pointed out, we don't even really know how Germany feels about Italy.

Also personally I kinda don't want GerIta to be canon. I have nothing against the ship! But Prussia's crush on Italy is really sweet and I'd be heartbroken for him if he lost his chance with Italy just like he did with Hungary all over again. Doing that twice in a row is too sad, poor guy.

The idea of HRE being Germany still kinda bugs me, and yeah, I also agree with that. Chibitalia was adorable, but so is Germany and Italy, and so is the other potential pairings and etc.

My friends told me about this and I'm torn. Germany as Holy Rome Empire would be absolutely adorable and sweet. But on the other hand, I feel it could undermine Italy and Germany's friendship (even if their friendship is a bit gay). But if something is confirmed, I'll deal with whatever I get. Either way some sweetness will happen. <3

I once saw something along the lines of "Hetalia's canon is based off of fandom" and I unfortunately think it's true. I think Himaruya only dragged it out this long because of the whole uprising of rhe HRE = Germany SQUEEEEEE theory and I wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't planned it like that at all originally.

(I'm probably ignorant of something he's said in his blog posts, so if I'm wrong, feel free to correct)

I won't be bothered especially one way or the other, because it's not like it would make their current relationship more or less real/significant. But I think it's highly likely, especially with the kid!Germany that popped up recently looking a whole helluva lot like HRE, and the page from volume 4 (I assume) that appears to be Germany waking up to some soldiers/citizens calling his name... it actually seems like we might see a resolution to the HRE = Germany question in the next volume.

Anyway, I DO wonder why, in ever BL relationship ever, there has to be some ginormous history (preferably involving selective amnesia) where the characters were already friends/lovers/enemies? It IS possible for people to just meet and fall in love later in their lives. But I guess it's super common no matter what: how many stories that originate in a high school setting, for example, feature the very-infrequent "married high school sweethearts" scenario for their epilogues?
