what, you do know that when you ship people are most likely to bash the other character that stands in the way of their pairing right?

The problem is when the bashing is just not butthurt harshed squeers, but ventures into sexism or some other -ism. Yes, it's true that there is an uncomfortable amount of misogyny among yaoi fandoms. It's also true that there's an uncomfortable amount of misogyny among het fandoms. Neither is okay. However, just because it also exists in het fandom does not excuse the behaviour from members of yaoi fandoms.

Also, you're kind of missing the point, but.

Err... I think yaoi fandom is NOTORIOUS for pointless female character bashing. I say this as an exclusive yaoi shipper so I wouldn't know about the het stuff.

It gets pretty ridiculous to the point of twisting canon to make the two guys hate the girl because she gets in the way even though in canon they care about her. Even a lot of fics come with a 'contains character bashing' disclaimer.

It's really prevalent in slash though. If you're shipping two guys (who canonically probably show only opposite sex attractions because interesting gay characters, most canons do not has) it's very likely that anyone who "stands in the way" of the pairing is female. I don't read a lot of het to be honest, but I'm guessing that the demographics are quite a bit different there. (It's possible they're still misogynist, or misogynist in other ways.

Of course you shouldn't have to write pairings you don't like, or characters you don't like, but this goes way beyond just writing a character out, and becomes writing the girl as someone so disgusting and terrible (even if she's actually not canonically a bad person) that nobody could ever love. Sometimes it even goes further than that, where she's horrible because she's a girl. And that IS sexist.

Yeah if I see someone write the girl as a horrible disgusting person nobody could ever care about I not only press the back button but I get the strong desire to tell off the writer. And I usually hate flaming. Bonus fail points if part of the reason she's "disgusting" is that she's a "slut who will sex up anything".

^ So there's some views from people who don't look at het o_O Slash and yaoi is still a niche market, one that people have to come online for. The rest of the media world is still caught up in virgin/whore nonsense around het couples where the ship war bait is deliberately done to give viewers something to fight over. The only good girl is the one viewers relate to, the rest are horrible evil bitches. The same thing gets played out in yaoi, only with the viewer relating to one of the boys instead.
