anon doesn't express themselves well and hopes they are doing this right

I definitely see where you're coming from, OP. I am not a shipper by vocation - that is, I don't care for the "romantic" aspect of relationships - but I love loyal, BFF-type bonds between characters. Especially (man-)hugging! Personally, I've always found reading mushy, romantic, messily physical interactions between characters (kissing, sex) to be incredibly off-putting, regardless of things like gender or age, but hugs give me the warm fuzzies like nobody's business.

Part of me wishes more fiction culminated in adorable hugs: everything in general, not only slash. To me, they feel more meaningful than those aforementioned "messy physical interactions" because, I don't know, cozying in close with a person seems like a more open, vulnerable gesture for some reason I can't even begin to explain. My crazy anon-logic. Anyway. I don't think you're alone, OP!

I like kissing scenes and understated romance if they're done nicely, but apart from that IA so hard. I don't like lots of emotion UNLESS it's the climax of the whole thing, after lots and lots of repression, and I LOVE BFFness.

Yes, exactly like that! Kissing and such is okay if it's downplayed and understated, but it's those rare, open and all-the-more-poignant-for-their-scarceness BFF moments that I hands down adore the most. Save the emotion for when it counts! Thanks for putting it a lot better than me :D

yeah, I feel like it kinda cheapens the moment when there's so much emotion all the time that you're drowning in it. It takes away the impact of the big scene. I happen to believe that friendship is just as important as romance and even that your BFF can be your most important relationship in life (sometimes), so I love it when a really close and totally nonsexual friendship is treated as seriously as romance usually is. Sex and sexual attraction aren't the only things that makes a relationship special!
