Agreed.

Yeah, the reader could just add ?style=mine, but is it her/his job to make the story readable? No. If the author really wants that people read their fics, in the perfect world they'd make it as easy as possible. And you know, with LJ and it's customizing options, it's really easy. No one but you, author, really cares about your layout or wants to see it while reading your entries.

I do want people to read my fics, and I do make it as easy as possible. I still don't use default comment pages though, because they are UGLY.

Fair enough rail against 8pt hot pink times new on black, but to assume all custom layouts are like that is just ignorant, sry2say.

If it differs from the default comment page, I will not read it, personally. I don't care if it's "easy to read," I find it distracting.

Just because you can't read a certain layout means that other people can't read it either. There are certain layouts that are obviously unreadable, like light grey text on white or something, but a lot of it comes down to individuals.

then allow me my preference of not reading them and stop thinking I'm shallow because I'm not embracing all layouts as easy to read and those that aren't...well it's just a matter of jumping through hoops to read someone's shitty fanfic. which I'm not going to do.

Where in my comment did I accuse anyone of being shallow? I didn't say you had to embrace all layouts, I'm just saying that what you might find hard to read, others might find easy to read. If you find typing "?style=mine" to be "jumping through hoops", you are lazy xD Granted, you are probably just a troll anyways...
