I sort of get what you're saying, and I sort of don't.

I'm female, but I only ever write slash, and I very rarely ever write female characters, and if I do, they're there to be supportive of the main couple and don't really interact too much. I have a reason for this- I find it very difficult to perceive other women as anything but a threat (it comes from very nearly dying at the hands of a group of girls who tormented you through elementary and middle school, culminating in them beating the hell out of me and leaving me to die in a ditch). I have a serious problem with female characters that remind me of these people, and believe it or not there's a lot of them out there.

I don't usually write female characters, because I usually end up casting them as villains, or threats to the main pairings. Every single time? I end up with people like OP of this secret saying I've internalized misogyny and that I must hate all women or something. Nope. I'm just fucking terrified of them.

Recently, I was writing a fic that involved a female character in a more supportive role, and I thought I did a good job of it. Apparently not, since that ended up bringing more feminist nerdrage towards me, because the character in question wasn't strong enough for them. You just can't win.

My point, OP, is that not everything is misogyny, and even if authors do try to include a female character then they get jumped on for her not being badass enough. It's fanfiction. Let writers write what they want.

Well, that's a horror story O-O Sorry that happened to you.

Don't bother writing to please LJ SJers though, just stick to what you enjoy. If you care about not being actively misogynistic, it's best to just ignore female characters if you aren't interested in writing them in a fully developed way.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the times I've actually tried to write well-developed female characters, they ended up just pissing off the SJ crowd, because they weren't "active" enough or something... I dunno. It's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. So now I just mostly write slash PWP. And childrens' stories to entertain my nephews when I look after them. (Kind of a big disparity there...)

And thanks. It's in the past now, but it does leave marks.

I was with you until I got to "nerdrage."

I'm sorry you got raged at, and for what happened to you in school, but do you really not see the irony of using "nerd" as an insult in the middle of a rant about fanfiction?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, I get it, I used the term "nerdrage" exactly for that reason. Their rage was just so... out of place for a rant about fanfiction, that I really couldn't think of another term to adequately describe it. It was very highfalutin academic feminist language that she used to yell at me- I don't think anyone outside of my philosophy professor speaks like that. That's why I used the term.

No disrespect meant to nerds, I am one. I just honestly couldn't think of a better term to describe it.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
so you are criticized (justly or unjustly) for your writing of female characters and your response to that is to stop writing them entirely

good job being part of the problem

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
DA

While my experience with women is nowhere near as horrific as the OP's, she does have a point. Why would ANYONE want to bother to write female characters if they just piss off every single butthurt feminist on the Internet? Especially when they've gone out of their way to make them especially PC? Or did you miss the part where she can't perceive most women as anything but a threat to her safety, and therefore usually can't bring herself to write them? And then when she did, she got screamed at by a bunch of feminists?

Goddamn you feminists are fucking idiotic. Did you fail third-grade reading comprehension or something? YOU people are the real problem, for people who claim to be so understanding about people with PTSD. Or does that not count anymore when that trauma was inflicted by a woman?

Anon up there, haters gonna hate. You write your slash, and you write those women as villains if it helps you deal with your trauma. Hell, you write whatever you want. It's your word processor, your fic. You do whatever the hell you want and fuck the haters. With a cactus.
