Slightly OT

TBH, while different house AUs place Hermione as a Ravenclaw a lot, I kind of more see her as a Hufflepuff in terms of work ethic in any case sometimes. I mean I'm pretty sure you can have Puffs which get excellent grades because they study like hell. Which Hermione would be. Not to say she couldn't be a 'Claw either though. Plus I think Hermione is pretty loyal- she'll help her friends even when they don't appreciate the type of 'help' she gives all the time and all (like the broomstick in book 3).

I also cannot for this reason ever see Ron as a 'Puff either (he doesn't work hard, but I guess even though he has his limits he can be loyal when he wants to be... but not all the time, so I'm unsure of where he'd fit in outside of Gryffindor). Maybe Slytherin even for his chess skills could be latent cunning/logic skills if he'd got the right encouragement and gotten over the horror of the idea or Rowling had actually decided to mold him into that sort of role over time. IDEK.

Anyone else?

I hadn't really thought of Hermione as a Hufflepuff before, but I can see it now.

I think Gryffindor and Hufflepuff are very similar in terms of favourable traits. Not that they're interchangeable, but they value similar traits like loyalty and bravery etc. So I can see Hermione as a Hufflepuff but when I think of an AU sorting for her my mind jumps to Ravenclaw, but I like the idea of her being placed in Hufflepuff.

This has actually my train of thought for a while. Ravenclaw is for witty and intelligent people, and while Hermione is book-smart, during her sixth year Potions, I found if she had actually been Ravenclaw-smart, she would have tried to do what Harry did, but of her own accord (mixing up her own potions to get a better result when she found out Slughorn wasn't as good as Snape).

But I think even JKR was kind of thinking of Hufflepuff as the misc. house at some point :/ And a lot of people still think of Hufflepuff as the misc. house which is why they think Ron might as well have been booted in there. But I agree that he might be in Slytherin. His chess skills show some smarts in there despite his book-dumb-ness, but it's not exactly Ravenclaw-smarts.

I really love you for this comment, you know.

The crazy thing is I could see Harry in Hufflepuff too. I mean he's kind of loyal ( a bit too loyal for my liking but that's for another day) to Dumbledore. His work ethic... isn't fantastic but he can be determined once on a 'mission' to see it through. But Gryffindor suits in its own way more than slytherin to me.

A lot of people place him in Slytherin in AUs for obvious reasons though (the hat and the drama of it all). But still having Ron be the slytherin would be interesting and different to what we usually see and could fit (usually Ron in other house AUs is a Puff or becomes an antagonist, not saying the latter isn't realistic because Ron is certainly one to do that and jump to that attitude, but I think eventually he'd concede to slytherin!Harry... eventually after he's hit by a clue-by-four. Not without some suspicion of course- which would served him well as a slytherin himself in fact to utlise on occasion if he was one). I mean Harry may have got some flack for being friends with a slytherin and it would have really shown (intentionally) more of the ugly side of Gryffindor. Ron's situation at first would be -horrible-. His family wouldn't disown him but they generally wouldn't be happy. He'd feel like a failure and Draco and co. in his year wouldn't treat him well. (I forsee Percy having to save Ron even as a prefect outside of dorms) It would be sad but interesting at first but it would be a fascinating character arc all the same and eventually mold him into something still arguably Ron but different at the same time.

S!Ron would be especially interesting with the family expectations and that. Plus I feel Ron could have been... more that just the best friend with the convenient wizarding family for Harry to go to. Because someone who could instigate the chess smarts to real life (which unfortunatly he didn't) is something that the trio could have really used in missions too. StillGryff!Harry is the hero who charges in. Huff!Hermione has magical knowledge from hours and hours of reading and practising. Slytherin!Ron could at points come up with strategy and plans or could even give tit bits of gossip which could be useful in general from his dorms. In the right environment in any case Ron could have ended up like that. Plus a good slytherin could have helped motivate him along with the not-so-good ones.

I'm writing an AU where Snape adopts Harry (long story, I swear it's much better than those three words xD) rn and I'm still putting Harry in Gryffindor even though all my friends don't think that would happen, but I think he's destined to be in Gryffindor. I don't think any other house suits him. I'm actually not sure about the Hufflepuff thing, I think a Hufflepuff might trust more blindly, and Harry was furious at Dumbledore for months over the fact that he hadn't told him everything. And a Hufflepuff would have been more trusting about the Snape thing too imo. If Harry was a Hufflepuff, he might have more faith in Snape, maybe even wondering if there was something going on between Snape and Dumbledore when he killed him.

I've always thought this :) I mean, she could work as a Ravenclaw, but I think Hufflepuff makes more sense. And I agree about Ron too.
