Was just about to mention Fringe when you did. How about Lost? I know it was a huge ensemble cast but they did a great job of making us care about every single one of them.

But yes, I miss 90s TV in general...

Um. No. Because OP is complaining about shows LIKE Lost. The ones that have season or series long arcs that you pretty much need to be a viewer from day one to understand.

OP wants more shows like the X-Files or Stargate, with tons of problem of the week type episodes you need very little background information to understand. Those shows had the longer arcs but they weren't as overwhelming as shows like Lost.
