Fuck yeah, 90s TV. I've been spending the last couple years going through the X-Files and Millennium, and I'm going to start collecting the Simpsons and Married With Children.

Related: I dunno if you play the video games, but I found Alan Wake to be a love letter to 90s adventure miniseries. It's even sort of set up like a TV show, with "previously on Alan Wake" preceding each episode. I found it to be an excellent game, albeit a slightly repetitive one, and it has some genuinely scary bits for a game that's supposed to be rated T.

Oh, I miss those shows. You are so right, OP.

I know what you're saying and I love 90's TV; I'm actually marathoning Xena right now.

But as for modern shows, there's always Doctor Who? It's fairly episodic but with a minor overall arc for each season. And Merlin's pretty good now and again.

I concur to an absurd degree.

Early Stargate SG-1 is still my ideal for this. They went through the gate, they got into trouble, they got out of trouble, they went home. They had mini-arcs and overarching themes, and sometimes they would bring up some small thing from thirty episodes ago and it was totally accessible for a new watcher but like a delicious cereal-box prize for loyal watchers.

Sigh. Well, you can't win 'em all.

I wish we still had good shows like that, but with today's loosened standards & practices and audience tolerance for longer arcs.

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, those shows. I miss them. I miss the monster/alien of the week. I miss being able to miss an episode of something for a week or two without being totally lost coming back into it.

Yeah, I totally know where you're coming from, OP.

[identity profile] lumati.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as I know people seem to dislike the show, I was just talking the other day about how I wanted something that'd grow on me the way Charmed did. Years later and I still love the series to death, it's one of the few live action fandoms I can actually get into.

It's also the first tv show I've ever bought dvds of too. I've got the first two seasons sitting on my shelf. I swear just looking at the boxes is enough to make me smile.

I've just.. yet to find something else I can get into to that degree and it sucks.

So yes, I have to agree for the most part.

[identity profile] jiveturkeyblues.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually have been very grateful to NOT have to watch 90's style shows lately. I never liked the reset buttons at the end of each episode and the feeling that nothing ever changed.

I miss those shows too. However, I think that there are actually quite a few semi-episodic shows out there. Warehouse 13? Lots of the USA shows like Burn Notice. Maybe Eureka. All of those have very self-contained casts and semi-episodic stories, though they are also all lighter in tone than Buffy, B5, X-files etc.

Personally, I just want more genre TV, and most of all I miss a good Space Opera. TV needs a new Space Opera.

Okay, you've got a right to feel like that? But I think it's silly to say there are no shows like that anymore. Leverage, White Collar, Chuck, I'm not even going to bother thinking of more.

But then, I personally don't really like any of the shows you mention very much, so it's possible I just don't get the unique thing about them that you miss. :)

There are three things that have happened to dramatic series that drive me nuts. And the worst thing, it's not just new shows, but even shows that have been on awhile are starting to do it, too:

1. A recurring story that nearly every episode is a part of, or at least refers to. Way to discourage new viewers, guys.

2. Recurring villains, some of whom last for several seasons. Is it so wrong to want a villain brought to justice (or even killed), and the show to move on?

3. Season-ending cliffhangers. If your show is good, you don't need a cliffhanger to get people to watch it next season. And it it's bad, plenty of people are willing to stop watching, even WITH them.

Eureka is pretty good for that. But yes, I miss those shows, too. :/ We're re-watching X-Files at the moment and it's awesome, even if the dreaded seasons of suckage are looming on the horizon.

[identity profile] dudette-in-town.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because people have really short attention spans now that they can't keep up with season long arcs.

I really don't understand how the truly arc heavy shows can survive. Look at BSG, it was so dense it was absolutely impossible for a new viewer to join after the first season (without DVDs or a really motivated and informed viewing buddy). BSG had tons of critical praise and its ratings still dropped like a stone as it progressed. No really: http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/List_of_Nielsen_ratings_(TRS)

I think this will die down a little more once people remember that the money's in syndication and you just can't watch a random episode of a heavy arc show and get too much from it.

Supernatural and Doctor Who are both like that. Also, it's been over for a few years, but Veronica Mars was like that too. Don't despair, that style of show's not dead yet!

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually prefer shows with long arcs, but there are many great shows with an episodic feel as well. I like Leverage a lot, if I could recommend it to you.

I'd recommend White Collar and Leverage in addition to Doctor who and Eureka from above comments.

Both are procedural with overall arcs that aren't too overpowering.

Was just about to mention Fringe when you did. How about Lost? I know it was a huge ensemble cast but they did a great job of making us care about every single one of them.

But yes, I miss 90s TV in general...

I think there are still some good shows out there but I agree in general. I think a lot of shows rely too much on Flanderization (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Flanderization).

So shout outs to all my beloved 90s TV including Nickelodean cartoons~ X-files FTW.

[identity profile] shinshokuinsane.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Babylon 5 will ALWAYS be my favorite show of all time. I watched it as a little kid with my parents (even when I was waayyy too young to for it, haha thanks mom and dad!) and it completely shaped how I think a story should be told and characters written. I LOVE YOU, BABYLON 5.

Buffy was also great.

[identity profile] phoenix-tears89.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kind of funny that you say that you like Fringe because it's the only (relatively) episodic-style show you can find. For me, it's the opposite-- I love Fringe because it's the only show I can find and enjoy that keeps continuity! Most shows, in my experience, have a formula that they repeat every time, and any characterization or progress is immediately thrown out the window so that when the next week rolls around they can lather, rinse, repeat. Plots almost never last beyond one episode, and are generally completely ignored after that.
