Like others have said, Hetalia wasn't the first to do this - anthropomorphising countries has been all over the chans for as long as I can remember. I don't understand why this specific version became so huge, except that maybe fans sometimes have dumb taste (and let's not get into 'taste is subjective and you can't judge' - there are definitely some pretty solid criteria that puts things in bad taste, we wouldn't have people who celebrate 'bad movie nights' or watching 'The Room' if this weren't the case).

Actually, some of its original popularity - I think it has to do with the sort of weird fetishization that goes on with WWII and fans, but that's my own pet theory. Yes, the WWII conceit may have been dropped, but you can't escape that it was the origin.

Personally, I kinda liked Afiganisu-tan and those comics a lot better. If any 'countries as people' thing was made, I'd like to see that one, because it was a bit more realistic with acknowledging atrocities. But fans are not interested in the Middle East, they want hot anime dudes. Hence, Hetalia.
