I think what disappoints me the most is that now no one will be able to make a decent version of the idea I originally had because everyone's just gonna say "YOU RIPPED OFF HETALIA!"

...I don't really think Germany's portrayal in the show is supposed to make him seem like a Nazi. I mean, blond and serious have pretty much been stereotypes about Germans since forever and it's not like Nazis were the only people in Germany to ever wear uniforms.

I guess I get your other complaints, but those are all the things I like about the show. It's portraying those stereotypes to show how silly and untrue most of them are.

If you want to see the idea treated and used seriously, try out the fanworks. Some of the fanfiction, fanart and doujinshi (Risorgimento ♥) do wonderful things with Hetalia's concept.

Honestly I think the way Himaruya did it is the only way it could be done and be published >.> It gets enough flak for being a humor comic without trying to be serious.

Hetalia's one of those things where I kind of like the fanfiction/fanart interpretations better than the source material, you know? At least for the more serious stuff. The original's brilliant for fanservice purposes.

But then, so is the fanfiction and fanart.

Not sure how you expected all that to fit into 5 minute shorts, but I kinda know how you feel in a way since I would DEARLY love to see a serious historical series of this kind. Hetalia's a silly webcomic made by a guy who likes cute stuff, how could it possibly be like you wanted? (Of course, I realize you might not have known about the source beforehand, but after all this time I would have thought that hearing about the show, you'd know that. Unless you came in via some of the more serious fanworks.) But seriously, the entire premise of the show is based on stereotypes. Also, Germany isn't supposed to look like a nazi all the time. Uniform + German =/= nazi. All the others have uniforms too, you know. Long story short, you're wasting your time wanting Hetalia to be something it's not, and you're also wasting a lot of irritation on something that's meant to be a joke.

When people complain about the designs and the art in general, they mean the anime adaptation by Studio DEEN, right? Because Himaruya's art is, IMO, absolutely stunning and adorable, while the dudes at Studio DEEN... aren't that good.

Sure, if you take the characters as you see them in a five-minutes episode, there's not much to do. The fun thing is trying to figure out their personalities according to canon and historical/cultural facts. Which is incredibly fun if you're willing to take the effort to do it. They're pretty complex once you start thinking about them.

Also, I don't see why would you think that Germany is a nazi. They make it clear he isn't very happy with the whole thing (maybe it's in the dub, but I really don't know about that).

OP, did you watch the original anime or the dub? And have you checked out the actual comics? Because the series seems to lose more and more the further it gets away from it's original author's hands.

Basically, manga > subs > dub. Funimation really fucked up the source material. Studio DEEN fucked up the art style (and split up storylines and left out notes and punchlines).

But if you were expecting some cute little webcomic to be all dark and serious and accurate to an academic degree, I'm afraid you're shit out of luck. And it's been said, but there's more to Germany's history than nazis, and it's really insulting to Germans when the first thing people think are "NAZI!!1" Just saying.

You're pretty harsh about it, but you're not entirely off the mark. Hetalia pretty much runs on cuteness and some lols, and just because it's sort of famous now it doesn't mean it can or should be taken so seriously.

This isn't exactly breaking news, either.

PS: If you've got that much of a problem with Germany's character, yeah I think part of that is your own reaction.

Your problem probably stems from the fact that you're watching the anime. The web comic has quite a lot of fun history tidbits added in that can't be animated, so the anime tries to make up for it by overdoing the cute factor.

Agreed, I couldn't get into it for all those reasons. It tried way too hard to be cute and I couldn't stand Italy's gimmick. That little Italy arc was was just so awful, I quit reading the comic because of it. Himaruya's style is obnoxious too. I think it's perfect example of terrible character design.

It's never been a serious or dark series as far as I know, and I've never really heard anyone who was talking about the series it's self ever make the claim that it *was* a serious series. Some of the fanworks are, some are dark to the point I personally can't read it. But the series itself? Hardly.

Also, on the Germany thing - like a lot of other people said, not all Germans were Nazi's. My great-grandfather was very much against the Nazi idealogy - to the point he actually immigrated away, despite the dangers that went with doing that during a major war. From what I recall there were Nazi's that were completely comfortable with some aspects of the actions taken by the Nazi party, so a character that's supposed to 'represent' all Germans would be influenced by those two groups as well...and at the end of the day it's up to the author how they want to portray their character anyways.

Also, one last thing on Germany - while yes there is far more to German history than WW2 - Germany, as a nation really wasn't that old in the 1940's compared to other nations. Because of that there's only so far back that you'd really be *able* to with a personification of that *country* since before that weren't one unified nation, even though they were certainly there as a culture. So that does put a limit on that character [which personally I feel is a shame because some of the stuff from before that is pretty damn interesting I think.]

-coughs- Anyways, moving on from that, Hetalia is just a series, and it's not the first series to have done this concept actually. So there is a chance of someone else doing this concept, and a defense if anyone tries to claim that they're 'ripping off Hetalia!'

tbqh if you look at Hetalia Germany and see a Nazi, then I think it's you with the Third Reich fixation. He's meant to represent the entire country throughout its entire history, and I think he does a damn good job of it. In fact, as someone who adores Germany the actual country, I was beyond refreshed to finally see a good portrayal of Germany that didn't resort to Nazi jokes left and right. Blond and serious are both stereotypes for Germans in general, and as for the uniform, every single character has a uniform. I've yet to see anyone accuse Russia of supposedly being a Red Army member, for example.

I'm sorry but the show is not responsible for your mistaken expectations based on ungrounded claims. It was never meant to be serious, it was always "fun with stereotypes."

Also, I'll never, for my life, understand why people keep calling Hetalia characters (especially the anime) "pretty men." Am I the only one who doesn't find the character design pretty and fanservicey at all...?
