For someone who doesn't understand the language, you have very good sentence structure.

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty common, actually. Depending on where OP learned English, they probably spent a billion years on "proper" grammar which no native speakers ever use XD

[identity profile] sasagi.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely this. And God knows how I hated learning all those rules by heart. :)

I can also add that we are much less likely to get trouble with homophones because of that very reason. Say, I've seen people confuse "gender" and "floor", because in my language the words are homophones, but I've never seen people confuse "there" and "their" because it's illogical to an ESL.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-04-21 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't bother yourself. If you try to talk to the isms-and-privilege crowd, you WILL be sorry, because, although there are some out there who genuinely do care about creating equality, the vast majority of that kind I've encountered are mainly concerned with getting revenge on anyone they think is better off than they are, and no matter who and what you are, there will be a number of them who decide that you are a fair target.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Revenge? Really?

From the comments you've been leaving in this comm that are similar to this one, it seems like you're the one out for revenge. You've had some disagreements on here, and just because people disagreed with you doesn't make them bad and horrible people. Get over it.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I like you, Anon.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
pff. If you haven't seen the "ALL PEOPLE NOT IN MY DEMOGRAPHIC IS EVULZ" wank then I suggest you go look it up before acting like you don't know what I'm talking about.

Wtf are you babbling about?
ext_562883: (i feel you)

[identity profile] ssjumi.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I always have to google mysoginy/misogyny/mysogyny/mi- ... well, that term for "hateful/respectless towards women", to figure out, how it is written, whenever I attempt to participate in discussions like that :/
So yeah, I feel you, OP.

Best thing is to just ask anon, what something means.
That was, how I found out what abbreviations like PC and PoC or words like "priviledge wank" mean... *shrug* If you're nice, you usually get at least one helpful answer :)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh...I think I finally see why people get misogyny so wrong now, if what they find when they google it is "hateful/respectless towards women."

The Social Justice Warriors seem to think being disrespectful to a woman makes you an automatic misogynist. When, no. Disrespect is disrespect. Misogyny is the hatred of women. Do misogynists also disrespect women? Yes, but there's a difference between disrespecting *somebody* and disrespecting *an entire fucking gender just because they're that gender*.

Don't worry about not understanding the people you don't understand. Chances are good they're full of shit.

don't worry about it

if you're in a comm just to discuss the series/thing, ship, and just generally have fun, I believe there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying you should turn a blind eye, or that there's no merit in learning any of the SJ jargon or "-isms", just that you shouldn't feel obligated to critique or keep up with whatever debate may be happening.

now, was that "complecated" on purpose :)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
again, what was SJ?

in during "really? but your english is so good here!" comments

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
BUT ESL FOLKS ARE STEREOTYPICALLY BAD AT ENGLISH, YOU GUYS!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
lol right? I don't think people realise how patronising that actually is.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's because it is confusing...and it has nothing do do with fandom. Unfortunately it seems to be so rampant there. Imho, accommodating them by actually looking these things up and taking them seriously only makes it worse.

[identity profile] alanahikarichan.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
It has everything to do with fandom, though, in a way. :\ I mean, so much of social perception and privilege is tied up with media, and there's a lot of people who engage with media via analysis. Not to mention some people in fandom are ridiculously racist or sexist or ablist or homophobic, and a lot of people in fandom are the people that racism and sexism and ablism and homophobia hurt.

Not saying that people have to engage in social justice discussions if they're in fandom, but social justice shouldn't just be dismissed out of hand, either.

Just keep reading. You'll pick up the vocabulary as you go along. (And most wank isn't worth the effort of a dictionary anyway.)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
No,OP, the point here is not that you *can't* understand the language. You plainly stated in the secret that you *don't want* to. Honestly, i think you have absolutely no right to complain about people using "difficult words" if you can't get the nerve to keep a tab on wordreference or something so you can understand what they're talking about. I mean, i understand your point and all, with English not being my native language either, but when i can't understand something i google it, instead of bawwing about not being able to understand.
Grow some nerve, you lazy ass!

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
wat

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for ESLs, OP! And yeah, I had a problem (and sometimes still do) with understanding them as well. Especially the cultural connotations of some expressions.
