Well, about the whole going to hell if you're not a Christian, your friend being bothered is actually an understandable reaction, since that's what that faith says (I'm no expert but it's definitely not the only religion that thinks this way); it's the reason children started to be baptized shortly after birth, so that they wouldn't go to hell for dying too soon.

Well, understandable if you put yourself in the shoes of someone who takes religion more literally, since there are many people who (like you?) think that it's a bit extreme and unfair as a rule. And there's those, like me, who can't reconcile the contradictions of the various religions and decide for a much migraine-less solution (ditching religion really took a huge weight off my shoulders).

As for the part about how Christians are perceived, I was Catholic too (or rather, I was baptized and grew up in a mostly Catholic country, so it was more of a cultural thing); and it's frustrating, most at times.

Those who actually use their brain realize that people can have different opinions and will just agree to disagree, or, even better, will look with a critical eye at religious principles and adapt them to modern society. I mean, the most recent stuff was written almost two thousand years ago! And there are many things in the Bible that people don't even know about, much less follow.

But then there are those who are so blinded by their faith that take things literally and try to shove them down other people's throats. And tell everyone who disagrees that they're such horrible people and that without religion the world would be a cradle of sins and crimes. Even when some things written in the Bible would be considered wrong by today's standards. Even when people who belong to that religion commit horrible crimes anyway. And then the Vatican (whose word should be truth for a Catholic, in theory) goes and supports people who have nothing Christian about them just because they kiss its ass and can make laws they like and give them privileges (butthurt Italian is butthurt)

So yeah, I know that not every Christian (or religious person, for that matter) is close minded and bigoted (there are many that don't believe or do everything they're told, since, well, times change and values do too) but the ones who are -- and they're way too many -- are also the most vocal and often will actively try to dictate the lives of everyone else, and won't even consider they could be wrong.

I'm sorry that you get associated with this kind of people, but as I said: they're frustrating, and sometimes you forget that there are also nice and understanding ones :(
