lol bisexual erasure is so important truly

almost as important as asexual erasure

Oh boy, have the Oppression Olympics started already?

I wasn't really trying to be. What I was trying to do was express annoyance at someone going "forget about your problem, this other problem (which has not come up anywhere else in the thread before this point) is worse!" But I'm not sure why I bother, really.

bisexual and asexual erasure are a minor annoyance, not a form of oppression

pointing out that lady gaga is a faker who does literally everything she does for the attention is not erasing bisexuality

and bisexuals are oppressed for being queer but they sure as hell are not oppressed for being bi, no matter how many butthurt bi people cry about the evil gays

the oppression that bisexuals face for being interested in the same sex is called homophobia.

Right, anon. We're not opressed for being bi. We're not forced to date people of opposite gender, because "we're attracted to them anyway". We're not told we're bi just for attention. We're not told by homosexual people, that we don't face the same problems as they do because we have it easier. We're not, right.

That's homophobia.

We're not told we're bi just for attention.

That's homophobia.

That's some gay people acting like assholes.

Bisexuals are oppressed. Of course they are. But they're not oppressed for being attracted to members of both sexes - they're oppressed for being attracted to members of the same sex. Homophobia manifests slightly differently for bisexuals than for homosexuals, but it's still homophobia.

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If that last one is just "some gay people acting like assholes" then I'm gonna say the first two are just "straight people acting like assholes".

Oh wait, no, it's "people acting like assholes by letting their phobias get the better of them" no matter who it is.

[identity profile] kelmendi.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, if example number three had been gay people saying that bisexuals are just closeted gay people/straight girls trying to be edgy then I would have called it internalized homophobia. But "We're not told by homosexual people, that we don't face the same problems as they do because we have it easier." isn't homophobia. It's some morons playing Oppression Olympics. It's stupid and annoying, but it's not actually oppressive in and of itself.

Similarly, if I said (choosing this example because I belong to both of the groups in question) that gay people have it easier in our society than women do, that's not a homophobic comment. It's a deeply, deeply stupid comment, but it's not homophobic.

[identity profile] mzminola.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You did say But they're not oppressed for being attracted to members of both sexes - they're oppressed for being attracted to members of the same sex.

I guess that's where we have to tease out in the discussion what we actually mean by "oppression". If we're only referring to legal restrictions, than yes, your statement about bisexuals only suffering from homophobic oppression stands.

But if we get into social pressures and attitudes, than it gets more complicated. Especially after the controversy with the Gay Softball; written about here (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/gay-ball/Content?oid=7770007) where some bisexual players got sorted into either "gay" or "not gay", and the teams face consequences based on those arbitrary decisions.

let's stop with the misery poker for a little while, plz.

No, bisexual erasure isn't getting anybody killed. But it is a consequence of homophobia. If it's assumed that bisexuals are only doing it for attention or that their straight relationships are way more important than their gay relationships, that's homophobia right there. It's pushing away evidence of somebody being queer because there's evidence of straightness too (and obviously the straightness is more valuable and important /sarcasm).

Yes, bisexuals have passing privilege (although not all bisexuals and not all the time). Yes, that means that some of them sometimes aren't affected by some of the problems that purely homosexual people face. But homophobia still sucks and this is still a consequence of homophobia and it's pretty easy not to assume that people's labels for themselves are wrong.

I don't know if Lady Gaga is actually bi or not, though she probably is if she says she is. I don't really care what Lady Gaga's sexual orientation is. It's just like, why are straight people who pretend to be queer for attention a thing? People are so eager to call out a queer person as a fake, and I can't help but feel there's something wrong with that. What about all the gay people who feel they can't come out, and pretend to be straight? Might that not be a bigger deal?
