To me, the angels have seemed more like a family that's tearing itself apart since right after they appeared.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds 'family' to me.

YOU'RE TEARING ME APART, LUCIFER!

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Sam & Dean are unrealistic, but I do LOVE the angels and their siblinghood and everything about them, basically. I think it's fascinating the way that there are, like, millions of 'em, and yet they still all have these incredibly close bonds and feel genuinely sad when another one dies and whatnot. It's very powerful to me.

Unless it's angels that haven't been introduced as characters in their right, e.g. the two nameless ones at Adam's resurrection site. I think there's a lot of potential there, but in the scope of a TV storyline and in actual execution, I really only see the kinship between the very few.

They seem like completely opposite spectrums of the dysfunction family gridline, to me, none more realistic than the other.

The Angels are like that family who's always at throats, who talk each other with barely concealed loathing, who stay away from each other when ever possible but who are really just acting out their daddy issues on each other.

The Winchesters are that family who are in each others pockets all that time, which creates such a ridiculous level of codependency, who know everything that has happened in each other's lives, who can spend days in a car with one another without committing fratricide, who can basically forgive each other anything eventually, mostly because they need each other so much, and who do this because of their daddy issues.

Conclusion: Daddy issues

'Conclusion: Daddy issues'

I feel like every conversation ever about SPN should end in that phrase.

I'm trying to think of the kids in SPN who have a present normal father, and the only one I can think of right now is littlegirl!Lilith's family. Everyone else was the product of single mothers, or siblings bearing most of the responsibility of parenting. I wonder if there's some projection of issues going on.

You pretty much said everything I came here to say. Thank you for that.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-24 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
This.

The angels remind me of an awkward, uncomfortable family reunion, where there's so many people at the reunion who barely know each other.
And the ones who do know each other, hate each other.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Different types of dysfunctional, I think. Sam and Dean ended up being too close and are usually terrible at handling relationships outside of those they consider family. The angels took the opposite approach and grew further apart to the point of Michael casting down Lucifer without a second thought. For instance, let's say each family were having dinner: Sam and Dean could get along way better, but have all these underlying issues and feelings that are never discussed in order not to hurt the other, ironically hurting them more in the end. The angels however would be throwing the good china, screaming at each other, and while everyone felt slightly better after that, nothing ever got resolved. I do agree that the angels' issues were fascinating and I especially love analyzing how each handled the dysfunction.

This is an amazingly awesome and insightful and perfect comment

I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I ACTUALLY PLACED MY HAND THERE. And thank you. <3 I have lots of feelings about SPN's family dynamics, and even more when it comes to the angels. And can I say I would totally want to watch that shouting match between them? It would be all Michael being a douche and totally the one starting it, Lucifer shouting some overdramatic phrase after being called out on anything("WHY DO YOU LOVE MICHAEL MORE FATHER?") and stalking off, Gabriel running off way earlier because despite his antagonistic attitude he totally hates fighting, and Raphael just being tired and not even caring anymore. The other angels are banished to a kids table where another fight is branching from that one. It'd be hilarious and sad.

YOUR COMMENTS ARE AWESOME. :D

Not being like your family =/= unrealistic depiction of family

(Anonymous) 2011-04-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
lol but the angels were written to parallel Sam, Dean, and dad's relationship.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Always saw it as - normal family, odd situation.

They seem to be the opposite side of the coin, but I can see how you think this...

*hugs*

Does anyone think Sam and Dean have a realistic family dynamic?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend whose family is like the Winchesters. It's not common, but they do exist.
