I thought it was funny as hell and re-read it occasionally and I've never seen the movies you mentioned nor knew about antikythera mechanism until you mentioned it. But it's true that the more you read it, the more jokes you pick up :D (plus I didn't read it in English for the first time so a lot of jokes had been adapted... felt like I got two amazing, funny books in one :D)

You know, I always wonder how books that rely on puns for humor translate in another language. The only GO pun I can think of at the moment is Newt naming his car Dick Turpin 'cause it holds up traffic, but that's not what I mean. Oh! In the translated copy of 'the Master and Margarita' the reader looses a lot of puns that mean "the devil" in Russian because it's awkwardly translated in English.

Sorry, it's wine-o'clock here, and I'm just starting to ramble. Basically, I'm asking about how books that are so heavily pun-infuse don't loose their humor in translation.

It depends on the translator. The guy who translates most Terry Pratchett books here in Serbia is AMAZING and usually finds a pun that means the same in Serbian :) If it's an untranslatable word play, they usually print the original and explain the joke. It's not the ideal option, but it's better than not translating it at all. Most names in Discworld novels are translated and that is why I never attempted to read them in English. I'm sure I'd get lost!

But in some countries they leave names as they are and leave it to readers who speak English to understand the pun :/

I guess it's down to language and how skilled the translator is and how much they like their job. Some just don't bother with additional footnotes.

A Swedish friend told me they translated all names in American Gods and she could see one of the twists coming because of what they call Wednesday in her language (avoiding spoilers here in case you haven't read it D:)
