To be honest, Bach's parenting skills has never crossed my mind. Though I think the actions of living artists are of more consequence (to me, obviously) than the actions of an artist who lived and died three hundred years ago.

Well, I agree to a certain extent, because judging people who lived centuries ago with our modern moral standards sounds quite ridiculous, you know?

[identity profile] softgraysky.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree, but I think it's more than that. Because Polanski - what he did, what he is doing, having run from the law, has consequences for our society today. The people that he hurt are still living, the laws that he ran from are still our laws. The whole Polanski mess has real effects beyond those who were involved - it says something about our society. So watching one of his films? Supporting him, being involved with his work, etc. touches on those issues.

Bad things that have happened in the past are still bad, even if they could be held to a different standard. But time sort of forgives it because it's no longer something we could condone but the event or behaviour or whatever that happened no longer is really hurting anyone. I'm sorry, this all sounded clearer in my head.

And I'm sorry for the tl;dr.

oh no, don't apologize, it is quite clear to me and most interesting. I do see your point and I agree, to a certain extent, but it does not change the fact that if you start having to agree and like an artist to be able to enjoy their art, you're going to miss a lot of very good stuff, because a lot of amazing artists are also fucked up people, for some reason.

Oh, yes, I should have made that clearer, but I agree with you completely.

Unless you mind, where did you come across that Bach was a bad father? I know he had lots of children, but other than that... (I'm a huge Bach nerdfan.)

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
no worries :)

and mn... I don't actually remember where I got that, but I think it was on a radio show. The general idea was that he didn't care too much for his (many) kids, but these were other times, too.

I do remember one thing in particular, about Johann Christian Bach, who was also a fairly good composer, and Bach (senior) being quite harsh with him about his music, and not encouraging at all but very derogatorily looking upon his work.

I like Bach as well and really, I've got nothing against him, I was just looking for examples of artist who did things which would be seen as morally dubious nowadays.
