Oh, well, that took all the fun out of it. I got to : "I FEEL BAD FOR ANYONE WHO -A-E -- ON THIS
BEFORE THE FINALE

IF ONLY THEY KNOW"

Before this link. Full translation :
"I FEEL BAD FOR ANYONE WHO GAVE UP ON THIS
BEFORE THE FINALE

IF ONLY THEY KNOW"

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was translating it too. Though all I had was:

"I -EE- --- --- --Y--E -H- ---E -- -- THIS -E---E THE -I---E
I- ---- THEY ----"

And then I was like, "I should probably start writing this down in the comments", and then I saw this comment. Love cracking them, though.

Not everyone can be as cool as us. Decyphering is pretty fun to do, though.

I can see we probably both started with the I's and E's, but I find it interesting how you found 'this' so early - I started with 'feel', the T's and H's were pretty much the last letters I found. /totally dorky observations

Yeah, I read Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold Bug once when I was in elementary school and since then it's been my crypto-inspiration. (Look for the most common symbol, it's probably "e").

And that's kind of interesting you started with feel; after "e", my first priority is usually to find "the" since it's practically in every English sentence ever. (There were four sets of three letter words; first two words, the last symbol wasn't common enough to be "e", third word, last symbol was common but there was also a two letter word starting with it and there aren't any commonly used two letter words that start with "e"; ergo, the last three letter word was probably "the".) Then once you have "the", you can start piecing out the "they"s, "that"s, "this"s, "there"s, their"s, etc. Which help a lot.

Though it's not as easy when the cipher intentionally screws with the "e". (I'm looking at you, Artemis Fowl.)

So... yeah. I started with all this in my head, and then I once I got past that I knew I'd have to start writing stuff down, so I came to the comments and, lo, it was already translated.

I wish I had another high-five gif for you.

But, yeah, starting with common words is best and that's probably what I would've done in any other case, but the double-symbols jumped out at me first since the possiblities are limited : double-L's in a four letter word are rare (elle? olly? wouldn't make sense, anyways), same for double-B's, T's, and other consonants; double-O's didn't work since the symbol re-appeared too often and in odd locations for an O; so I chalked it up to double-E's. Then, logically, I filled in 'feel' - within the context of fandom secrets the word fit well. And on from there... I don't want to bore you.

My method was a lot more slap-dash than yours, and I admittedly got lucky with some stuff - like guessing 'for' properly -, so it definitely would not have worked as well in any other scenario.

I would be ticked if the E's were messed with, or if it also got passed through a Caesar cipher.

/just piling on the dorkage

Ah, I knew something felt off - a quick Googling reveals a Ceasar's cipher is not, in fact, the same thing my head thinks it is. I was thinking of a Ceasar's Square, damn them for having similar names. Of course, a Ceasar's cipher wouldn't actually change anything, since you're just replacing symbols by symbols, no matter how many times you'd do this it wouldn't change the arrangement of letters... My bad :|

That's okay. I don't think I have any high-five gifs let alone multiple ones... though I do have this warm-hearted punching icon.

And yeah, I don't know whether you've read the Artemis Fowl books, but each one has a cipher running across the bottom of its pages in the "faerie language". There's a key in the first book that makes it easily crackable, but I ignored it. Only thing is, the symbol for 'e' isn't its own symbol; it's a squiggle running underneath the symbol before it (and double 'e's get a squiggle both above and below), and I took that to mean that they were different symbols completely. I spent a couple hours cracking it (because my normal 'e'/'the' methods weren't working) and I had a little over half of the alphabet figured out when I finally passed my limit because I just wanted to know which symbol was 'e' and why there were so many squiggles.

Also, I figured that's what you meant about the Caeser cipher/square.

Oh, dang. I wish I'd known about that before I went and deciphered the whole thing by myself. (It was fun though, thanks OP!)

"I feel bad for anyone who gave up on this before the finale.

If only they know."

I agree! I also feel for anyone who has to proofread cipher.

Why not "knew"?

OP

Typo that I failed to catch since it's in cipher and I didn't proofread.

Clearly I was copying Shaft who also made typos all the time either unintentionally or purposefully to throw off code breakers.
