Secrets are already anonymous, why bother making them cryptic too? Christ.

You do see how that would confuse *sexuals, don't you? For most of us romantic attraction does = sexual attraction. Indeed, that tends to be viewed as the difference between romantic love and things like familial love, religious love, friendship, and patriotism (which can all be equally deep kinds of love, but rarely sexual).

So saying "I have a partner whom I'm romantically attracted to and have sex with" is understandably confusing for *sexuals, because it makes you sound exactly like us. It's not calling a gay person deluded, it's hearing a gay person say "oh I'm romantically attracted to my wife, have sex with her all the time and enjoy it, but no really, I'm gay" and going "....come again?".

Re: NF

This. A lot of *sexuals fit what this secret is expressing.

I am now thinking of the concept of loving your country sexually.

this...is basically the major premise behind Hetalia fandom lol

Actually I do get what the secret is saying (though I'm not ace). I'm not sure I can express it better than the secret does, but I get it. A person might be in love with their partner and choose to have sex with them but still not feel a sexual desire of their own. I don't find it hard to understand.

(Also, some people do identify as gay or lesbian and still get into relationships with the opposite sex. Some people might say "Oh, they must really be bisexual" but if they don't say it, then, well, they don't.)

Re: NF

Dude, no. The point is that you can do all that, but you are not enjoying the sex you have with your partner. Maybe on an emotional level you take satisfaction from pleasing your lover, but not the sex itself, because you are asexual. Having sex=/=liking it. Nor does liking masturbation=liking sex with people. Asexuality is really about the not being attracted to people.

Is there any real reason you should question the sexuality of someone who says:
"Oh I'm romantically attracted to my wife, have sex with her all the time and though I don't enjoy it myself it makes her happy, so I'm willing, but no really, I'm gay"

Re: NF

I *think* what the OP is getting is something along the lines of 'It's like having a type of food you don't like. You can understand why other people like it, and you can eat it, but you get no real enjoyment from eating it yourself/you don't have the desire to eat it yourself.' or 'When we see someone who would be considered sexually attractive, and is of our preferred *romantic* orientation, it's still like looking a picture. We think it's beautiful, but it's not something that we're going to desire to have sex with.'

Granted that's simplifying it a bit, but it's probably a couple of the better examples I've seen for it.

correct me if I'm wrong but

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
as far as I understand it, some(not all!) asexual people have sex just because it brings them emotionally closer to their partner, and makes their partner feel good, without getting any actual pleasure out of it themselves.

Sort of like... if you were in love with a lady, let's say, and she really liked going disco dancing and you didn't like disco much at all, but sometimes you'd go discoing with her anyway because you knew it would make her very happy and strengthen your bond, and the discoing doesn't pain you or anything, it's just mildly uncomfortable! (:

JFC I AM SO SICK OF THIS WANK.

Just because a couple of BNFs have said that they personally don't find the fandom quite as great in comparison to their personal experiences in its heyday and so are scaling back their involvement and participation DOES NOT MEAN THEY THINK THE FANDOM DOESN'T EXIST OR THAT CURRENT FANS ARE TERRIBLE OR WHATEVER THE FUCK ELSE YOU WANT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. It also certainly does not mean that the fandom is just going to up and die, OR that those former ~BNFs~ deserve anon hate 24/7.

Stop letting other people dictate how you enjoy a movie. Christ.

Dear lord, people make too much of a deal out of sexual minutia. Don't expect a label to do the work of people getting to know you over a period of time.

-sighs- OP, I understand what your trying to do, and I understand why you'd feel frustrated...but this secret really does *not* help. It's a bit confusing, and hard to follow and *yes* does make it sound like aces might very well be sexuals.

N!F

(Anonymous) 2011-04-26 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's time to move on from the label when your construction of it is so convoluted and tailored to your own personal experience? There ought to be some universality to a label since, y'know, a label is meant to be applied to a collective group people for a certain degree of simplicity. What you have here is... impractical and unproductive, to say the least.

By all means, define and identify yourself however you want, with as many details as you'd like. But what you have here isn't really the absolute definition of asexuals. It's not even a good definition, tbh.

N!S: Aaagh! I was with you 'til Friends With Benefits. Everything else, yay, but you can go shave your back now, Justin.

N!F: Man, you put all that work into this and it didn't get posted. :P Bummer. But...is "frigid" actually a thing? Isn't that a cringily antiquated and usually misogynistic word that men in, like, the '50s used to use to describe a woman didn't want to bang them (and/or possibly a lesbian)? Just saying. I'm sure there are other valid points here, I just dunno about that one.

Labels lead to so many frakking problems.
