If you're talking specifically about children (as in, still under the age of puberty), then yes, I agree with you one hundred percent. However, I feel stories about 'children' past the age of puberty can be either squicky or just fine, depending on the context and the way it's handled. A 31 year old having sex with a thirteen year old? That's always gonna be a little dicey to me. However, a story about a 14yo exploring their budding sexuality with someone in their own age range? Doesn't bother me at all. You know why? Because at fourteen, you better believe I was doing the same thing with people in my age range.

yeaaaah i agree. if they're over or around the age of 14/15, then i kinda think it's okay to read or like. fantasize about, or something. maybe because i'm 15 myself and i know full well that my friends will go out and do shit like that, so it's a reasonable age to me.

but anything under those ages and i start to get a little weirded out, especially with huge age differences like the 31-13 example;;

I think if you're the same age as the character (or close to it) you're in the clear! :P You'd have a crush on a kid your age, not one that's 7 years older!

However, there are probably people in their 30's reading about the same characters and that's when it starts to get creepy.

mostly, i read things with pairings because i like the character interaction and it either makes me LOL or it makes me d'awww, so i never really understand sexualization all that much when there's DIALOGUE TO BE HAD!!1

so... i can sort of understand a 30 year old reading/watching something that's very interesting and uses sexualization as an... augmentation? instead of the main focal point of a relationship or story. i think it's always fascinating to involve myself in intruiging character dynamics, so i would assume the same for them.

however, while i think sexualization and fantasies and shit are reasonable if you're around the same age, i completely agree think it would be weird for the same 30 year old to go OH AND I THINK THE FANTASY OF THESE TWO 15 YEAR OLDS FUCKING IS REALLY AWESOME /FAP FAP

it's the school holidays for me and i've just got up so idk i prooooobably won't be making any sense :|;;

Nope, I agree!

For example, I really like kids movies and shows still (I'm early twenties), but I'm not fantasizing about... say Ben10. To some degree I'd give a pass to shows that you started to watch when you were the target age group, particularly if the show's characters age (like when teen titans came out: people who started watching and shipping when they were the characters' peers are now in their 20's or so, right?).

Harry Potter might have been a better example, if I had thought of it. A 16 year old with a crush on Harry Potter in 2001 would be crushing on a 14 year old? Now they'd be 26. @.@ A little creepy now, but I wouldn't begrudge them when they were 22 crushing on a 17 year old (even if normally a bit creepy).

i can see what you mean, yeah! i completely agree.

myself, i just finished re-reading inter nos because hng shizuru and natsuki and shizuru/natsuki and ANCIENT HISTORY, and i still skip awkwardly through any sort of M-rated material. something about sexualization in general just makes me feel really odd, like i'm intruding on a private moment.

I had a crush on Harry Potter, back when I read it as a kid. He was always a few years older than me... now that I'm 19 and I reread HP and realized that I don't have a crush on him anymore. I'm not sure however if you can expect this to happen to anyone, so the way I see it: if you've had a crush on a character since you were about the same age, then it's fine to still crush on that character when you get older. It wouldn't happen in real life, because in real life people grow up...

That being said I love Hermione/Remus fic (especially if Hermione is underage)... or Sirius/Harry. and I do find the smut hot, but because I find Remus and Sirius hot, not because of the underage teenagers.

Yeah, my own comment would have pretty much been this, but not so nicely worded.

To me, if its teenagers (16+ being a preference, though I know different people will have different ideas about what age is best) and the sex is safe, sane and most importantly, consensual, then why should anyone care if they aren't the exact/over age of lawful consent.

(There are still points to debate here, of course, but in short form, that's how I feel about this secret.)
