Okay maybe this is a weird thing to ask but... how does this make it a non-legitimate way to spend time? All this tells me is that minds at rest require fixations and distractions. We live in a comfortable society and are given a great deal of mental lax time and everyone deals with it differently. Fandom is certainly unhealthy if it's someone's only activity, but as hobbies go it's a pretty good one? As a fairly accomplished academic and someone who has had professional writing opportunities in the past and will assuredly continue to have them in the future, I can personally attest to the fact that spending time in fandom has more legitimately helped me than, say, watching Television or being a member of a church.
