I'd agree with you, if it weren't for the fact that fandom is inherently kind of unhealthy in general. It warps and it changes, it alters and it molds. You can't make fandom legitimate, because it's not meant to be a legitimate way to spend time. For a good number of people, it does the same sort of thing organized religion has been doing for centuries, on a far smaller scale.

That's not to say that we're trapped in some sort of Tumblr/LiveJournal/chan enhanced Matrix, and that all creators of any fiction ever are our Agents, but it's just something to think about. Of course, something only changes you when you let it change you, so it's not a big deal. We come across a lot of unhealthy things all the time, the challenge is keeping it in moderation.

I guess what I'm trying to say in this rambling little post is that if MSPA did all that to someone, it's their fault alone, and not the fault of a webcomic drawn by a dude they've never met. The human mind and the choices it makes is far more dangerous than an inanimate work of fiction.

Sez you.

I would be willing to bet money that a lot of people in fandom would become less interested if it didn't feel like such a personal, private experience. If it was legitmized and as commonly accepted as sports, if the cheerleaders at school sneered at your fandom 'cause theirs is better, oh man, people would jump ship so fast. Part of why people indulge in fandom is to get away from the 'mundane', if it became the mundane it would be pointless.

Simply put, part of why fandom is so fun is because it's nerdy and not socially accepted.

Sports are also fandoms. And the fans can be just as nerdy as any other fandom.

Basically cheerleaders are sneering because they think their fandom is better. And no one jumps ship.

Okay maybe this is a weird thing to ask but... how does this make it a non-legitimate way to spend time? All this tells me is that minds at rest require fixations and distractions. We live in a comfortable society and are given a great deal of mental lax time and everyone deals with it differently. Fandom is certainly unhealthy if it's someone's only activity, but as hobbies go it's a pretty good one? As a fairly accomplished academic and someone who has had professional writing opportunities in the past and will assuredly continue to have them in the future, I can personally attest to the fact that spending time in fandom has more legitimately helped me than, say, watching Television or being a member of a church.
