I love you, OP.

[identity profile] punishermax.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
~we fade in to a lonely windswept city street. The winds blows a morose whistle through the crumbled buildings, the tattered shreds of newspapers and the unseen, but always felt, shreds of dreams~

~The OP walks through this broken cityscape, staring in growing horror at the windows of the buildings. Though they crumble and break down on the outside, inside they are warm and safe, safe in the incessant glow of their computer screens~

~He watches in horror as in window after window, fat, sweaty and unclean men and women stare and click at their computers. In each window he sees the same mark of horror, the same awful site that created this nightmare world~

~The awful art, that incessant video game like music, those memes and leetspeak filled chatlogs. They signal the force, that unspeakable nightmarish force of destruction that has swept through this fair city, nay this WORLD.~

"Homestuck...~

~a whisper escapes the OP's lips, like the vocalization of a particularly offensive curse. It slithers into the air, that venomous word that indicates sloth and gluttony~

"DAMN YOU ALL! WHY DIDN'T YOU LISTEN TO ME!"

~The OP shrieks to the sky, begging the very god that has mocked him, left him in this world of those oft warned about stairs, those pornographic puppets and Matesprites. Tears run down the Op's face for those broken down dreams. Those hops of a world of tomorrow.~

~we pan up to a single room's window. Out of it falls a single Cheeto. We follow it's descent downward, orange dust softly falling away like an insane imitation of snow. It hits the ground. It cracks into a million cheese flavored pieces.~

~This is the way the world ends...not with a bang...but with an F5~

I'm going to take this with a grain of salt and assume, just for a minute, that OP is completely serious and that I understand what they're trying to say. That said:

You do realize that it's possible to be in fandom and still be a productive member of society, right? And I'm not just talking Homestuck, here, I mean everything. Fandom is a hobby, just like collecting stamps or building model airplanes. So yes, while I do spend a lot of my free time on the internet, reading fic, working on cosplay, what have you, I also spend a good majority of time attending classes to earn a degree, working a part-time job to save up money, and hanging out with non-fandom friends in a public, social atmosphere. And I'm sure there are plenty of others here who could say the same.

I just really resent the idea that being in fandom = complete and total loser with no life or future. Okay, perhaps a few select individuals fit this model, but for the most part we are all just pretty much normal human beings, thanks.

The overwhelming majority of fiction is set offline, even in this age where an enormous and growing number of people spend the majority of their time on the internet. If it touches on those who spend most of their time online at all, deals with them as having a condition to be cured. Even something like .hack//SIGN, set in an MMO, centers on the main character being given the horrible fate of being unable to log out. (And until SPOILERS I was rooting for Tsukasa to stay that way - it was only other people who had a problem with it.)

Can't you be satisfied with EVERYTHING ELSE?

(And I think I just gave a serious response to a troll secret, judging by the other replies...)

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Just a TINY bit hysterical, but I see your point.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'd agree with you, if it weren't for the fact that fandom is inherently kind of unhealthy in general. It warps and it changes, it alters and it molds. You can't make fandom legitimate, because it's not meant to be a legitimate way to spend time. For a good number of people, it does the same sort of thing organized religion has been doing for centuries, on a far smaller scale.

That's not to say that we're trapped in some sort of Tumblr/LiveJournal/chan enhanced Matrix, and that all creators of any fiction ever are our Agents, but it's just something to think about. Of course, something only changes you when you let it change you, so it's not a big deal. We come across a lot of unhealthy things all the time, the challenge is keeping it in moderation.

I guess what I'm trying to say in this rambling little post is that if MSPA did all that to someone, it's their fault alone, and not the fault of a webcomic drawn by a dude they've never met. The human mind and the choices it makes is far more dangerous than an inanimate work of fiction.

So many generations have done the "new form of media X is corrupting our children and it'll surely be the end of civilisation" thing already, it's getting kind of boring. Can't you think of something new? :|

(nevermind that if any civilisation was this easy to destroy, it couldn't have been very good to begin with and almost certainly deserved to go)
