In all seriousness, though, I think you're taking things a little too seriously. Homestuck makes fun of itself AND its readers all the time, for god's sake. If anything, it's more of a parody of the shut-in lifestyle, rather than something that glorifies it. I was a reclusive internet-addict for years before I found HS, and I'll probably continue to be for many many many many more years. It's not because I read HS. It's because I have chronic fatigue and a number of other health issues, and half the time I don't even feel up to getting out of bed to do more than pee and get something to eat. "Going out" has never appealed to me. I'm not a big fan of crowds, or large groups of strange people I don't know. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people in this fandom could say the same. You could blame whatever there is in my upbringing that might have led to this, but there wouldn't really be much point. It is what it is. A webcomic has nothing to do with it. Besides, it sounds to me like you're either a person who only uses the computer for email and important things, or you're fortunate enough to have an adequate number of friends "IRL", or at least close enough that you see them in person once in a while. Not everyone has that. My closest friends, and some of the best people I've known in my life, were people I met through fandom, over the internet, and have never met in person. I connect more with these people than with anyone I've met locally in the last five years. That's what Homestuck is about, to me. It's about four kids who have probably never met in person, working together to save the goddamn world. The trolls may have started as a mockery of internet trolls, but there's a lot more going on there. And a lot less, depending on how you look at it. It's a webcomic, it makes lots of people happy, it has some of the best writers and artists I've seen in a single fandom, and Hussie's too much of a troll himself to do something deliberate like try and corrupt today's youth into sitting alone in their rooms 24/7.

tl;dr, unless you or someone you know personally has suddenly switched to this lifestyle and you have watched their physical and mental health decline rapidly from reading this webcomic, MOVE ON and don't read it if you feel that way about it. I'd say don't get involved in the fandom, but I realize if you RP or something that can be difficult to avoid.

*de-anons because less lazy now!*

I'm pleasantly surprised, I was afraid I'd get booed off the stage. :D

A++ would read again.

Homestuck is a parody, honestly. Hussie makes fun of himself all the time. It's probably one of the least srs bsnss things I've ever read/played/watched, and the fact that people try to scrutinize and over-analyze it to this extent just baffles me, tbh.

It so is. Nothing has gotten really good gut-busting laughter out of me lately except for Homestuck, and some of the nonsense the fandom comes up with, because it's all so ridiculous and most of it makes no sense.

Agreed in almost every way (I've never read Homestuck, so I really can't say whether it parodies, glorifies or is an allegory for riding herds of purple unicorns across the Australian desert- seriously, I have no clue).

I spend more time online than I do just about anything else because economic issues forced me to move to a part of my country where I am away from all of my close friends by fifteen hundred miles in every direction, and this is the only way we can stay in touch, and also because I'm a working class single mom who can't really afford to entertain herself in any other way. (Would I like to be able to hang out with my close friends in person? Yes, I'd sell just about anything I own for that. But if I sold everything I own, I still couldn't- round trip travel for two people- i.e, me and my daughter- is just that freaking cost-prohibitive.) "Going out" for me is either getting something out of Redbox and ordering a pizza with my family, or carpooling to soccer games and synagogues.

Plus, I can't afford cable TV at all, or new books very often, so...once the kid's in bed, I can either hang out by myself doing nothing, or get online, watch enough stuff on Hulu to stay current, read some webcomics and fanfiction, and then hang out on LJ and Tumblr and Trillian. That's just my life. Webcomics (Homestuck is a webcomic, right?) "glorifying" a shut-in lifestyle need not apply.
