I get where you're coming from but I think the whole thing is much more positive than that.

Yes, it's about the way social interactions exist in geek-based spheres on the internet, and many of the characters are great friends without ever having met. And yes, it's about a fantasy world created by a real-life video game.

Hate it as much as you want, but the internet is a significant form of social interaction nowadays, especially in geek spheres, and yet how often do you see it properly used in fiction? The cast of Homestuck IM each other while going on adventures and doing fun plot shit. Hell, even the four quadrants of troll romance are based on the way people feel about each other in flamewars when emotions are running high - they're either on your side, your enemy, begging you not to start wank or acting as an IM go-between between you and the person you're fighting. I definitely agree with you that this is why it got so big. I doubt it was an act of evil, though; I think the author just wanted to write about something that doesn't get attempted often that formed a significant part of his life.

As for the video game stuff, 1) how is it any different from the billions of stories out there about children getting sucked into fantasy worlds and 2) it's made very clear that the Medium is not a good place to be and the kids DESTROYED THEIR OWN WORLD getting there.

At absolute worst, it appeals to people who are already shut-ins by legitimising their own social experiences and perhaps making them feel more real and alive. It's certainly not going to persuade anyone with a healthy social life into locking themselves in their room and dreaming about finding redrom on Skaia.
