Totally OT..

[identity profile] sweetreverie.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is anyone else who has read the books finding it really hard not to spoil non readers, especially when stupid questions are asked? This secret is good btw. After the way they treated the relationship, especially in the first episode, compared to the books I am pleased some non readers are realising it is not a bad relationship.
HBO themselves seem intent on spoiling people by asking stupid questions on facebook and twitter etc, that any reader could answer accurately. I read all the incorrect responses and get so annoyed.

Also tbh, if I was watching a TV show based on a hugely popular book I hadn't read and wanted to avoid spoilers I would not go to those websites.

As someone said above - when I first read the books, a friend who had read them already told me not to get too attached to any characters. Especially in the later books as I think GRRM went through some rough times himself during some of them.

I personally don't understand how non-readers can follow the story. There's so much information thrown at the viewer at once, and it can be hard to understand who's who and what's happening---especially if you accidentally miss a line here and there.

This too. I only picked up new things on my 2nd and 3rd reads too (of the whole series so far that is). Read it many more times since then as well and may have picked up even more nuances each time.
For the length of the episodes and the series they are having to fit a lot in at once. I am enjoying it (ignoring the always inevitable annoyance of certain small changes, but it has been pretty true to the book and I know why they had to make the changes), great atmosphere and casting especially. They have caught the tone of it.

But for me it was the same with the books too. At first I couldn't keep track of who everyone was and what was happening exactly. I couldn't even remember their names...But after a while everything started to make more sense.
I guess they just have to watch and pay attention to all the details and after a few episodes they'll also understand everything better...

Yeah, when I watched a re-run with my mom, I put on closed captions and said I PROMISE I WILL TRY TO EXPLAIN WHO THESE BLONDE PEOPLE ARE THEY KEEP CUTTING TO I KNOW IT'S CONFUSING.

Speaking of which, they really should have put the scene with Ned and Catelyn first and then introduced Cersei and Jaime because everyone I watched with went WHO IS THAT DEAD GUY AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW OR CARE?

lol I don't find it too hard tbh, except for the names.

You know, I thought that, but all the non-readers I know who are watching it seem to get along fine (including my mom, which is saying something. She found True Blood deeply confusing, so I assumed she'd have a hard time with GoT, but she seems happy enough).

HBO is known for having shows with lots of characters doing lots of things, though (True Blood, The Wire).

I actually haven't been having too much trouble following along... they just don't use names enough so I can say 'so-and-so's' kid, but not their names. I think I understand parts of the backstory and relationships though I'm sure there's tons more to learn.

I'm totally torn between picking up the book now or waiting until the first season is over and then reading it.

Well that's good to know! I'm glad non readers are enjoying the show too.

Read along with the episodes? I know a couple people that are doing that.

God, I was so happy it didn't seem like they were going Rape Is Love in the first episode, because maybe it's just me, but when I read that book I was so, so skeeved by the way the first sex scene was written.

Re: Totally OT..

[identity profile] sweetreverie.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Really? It was the opposite for me. I loved how they showed Drogo's (slightly) more sensitive side. And he did basically ask her if she wanted to go through with it or not. I get what you are saying that she didn't really have a choice anyway but I just preferred the book version over the totally blatant rape in the tv version.

I think a lot of my reaction was based on age squick so I totally get what GRRM was going for, but some primal part of my brain went SHE'S SO YOUNG SHE HAS NO IDEAAAA!

Re: Totally OT..

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I am torn, because on the one hand the book SQUICKED THE FUCK OUT OF ME even more because of how it sort of went for the angle of sex = love that I could never quite get passed, but I really hated how they framed the dothraki and Drogo. It's weird, because I think if they'd done the scene like the book, but without any of Dany's inner thoughts (which felt so Stockholm to me, which is part of why I hated it, I think) it might have gone over better... but instead they did what they did and I was feeling the same feelings I had when I read the book.

[SPOILER WARNING]

Is anyone else who has read the books finding it really hard not to spoil non readers, especially when stupid questions are asked?

I'm not having that hard a time online, but I'm having a damn hard time IRL. I'm in the middle of reading the books (almost done w/SoS), and I like to discuss them with my boyfriend. But now my roommate (who hasn't read the books) has started watching the series, so I keep almost spoiling him by mentioning something I just read in front of him. (Plus, HE keeps asking questions, and while I can just not answer online, it's hard to know how to respond to something like "So did Jaime ever get Cersei pregnant" when someone asks it to your face).

Re: Totally OT..

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it is SO HARD not to spoil it! I'm the only one in my household who's read them and we watch it together and I've just got my hand clapped over my mouth at all times. XD; This is verbatim the conversation my dad and I had while watching the very first scene of episode one, when the three men of the Watch are scouting past the wall:

Dad: Who's this guy? (referring to the one bossing them all around)
Me: Erm...
Dad: I thought you've read the books.
Me: I have.
Dad: Then who's that guy?
Me: ...
Dad: I don't care if you spoil it.
Me: ...It's really not going to matter in a few seconds.
*guy in question gets killed*
Dad: Oh...
