I'm really sorry for that, OP. For what it's worth, as long as you don't abuse/attack/blame any women in your fiction/RP/etc, I personally don't have a problem with it...

::sends hugs if you want them::

Came here to say this. If someone generally has no interest in female characters, I think it's a bummer but I'm not gonna get mad about it unless there's actual bashing involved.

[identity profile] ashley marquardt (from livejournal.com) 2011-04-27 02:44 am (UTC)(link)

WHY YOU SO FAIL SELF?

You just put what I meant way better than I could. I bow to your superior wisdom at explaining things. (^___^)

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome? xD But I think you put it just fine~

(That's not to say I think all dislike for female characters is bad either. I just think there should be a more legit reason for disliking a female character than "SHE'S IN THE WAY OF MY OTP BAWWW.")

Eh, I'm usually a huge fan of female characters but it doesn't bother me if people aren't interested in them (even if they don't have a good reason like yours.) It just bothers me if people spend lots of time bashing them or think they shouldn't exist in general. (I have seen that last, on here in fact.)

There are other people out there to promote female characters if you really don't feel like it.

(And I hope someday you're able to live your life the way you need to and really are.)

Oh, get over it. You're not doing anything wrong. It's not like you're saying "female characters shouldn't exist! Women shouldn't do blah blah blah!" You're not geeking out over things that don't excite you. Not a crime.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that you want to identify as male and surrounding yourself with male characters with male issues is a fantastic way to do that. What I don't understand is why you can't admire qualities in females which are not gender specific. For example, courage or a sense of adventure. There's nothing wrong with feeling great appeal to males, but I can't why you think that should stop you enjoying the genderless qualities of women too!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're reading things into the secret that aren't there.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Please explain?

Secret poster has said he wishes to live 'vicariously though fictional' males because of his gender dysphoria. He explains that he fears he's 'contributing to the marginalization of female characters' presumably due to the fact he almost exclusively likes/ships/role plays/draws and writes males.

I suggested that he continues to use fandom as a source of peace through exploring male sexuality to come to terms with his own issues, but I expressed confusion that he was unable to appreciate the genderless qualities of women (assuming that the reason he hasn't is because his primary focus is on 'males' and, by conclusion, he would not appreciate exploring 'feminine' ideals).

I don't know why he can't have his cake and eat it too!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Not wanting to live vicariously through female characters is not the same thing as not appreciating/admiring any quality (genderless or otherwise) of women. Your assumption is a big one.

I think the fact that you worry enough that you might be "contributing the marginalization of female characters" to make a secret about it is evidence that you are far from misogynistic.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
And here's more proof that the fandom feminists have gone WAAAAAAAY too far.

Look anon, I don't like okra. Can't stand the stuff, and I don't like to eat it. I'm not denying the existence of okra by refusing to eat it. It's a preference. Same with your preference for slash pairings- it's a preference, and if people are giving you crap over that, then you need to find new fandom friends. Simply preferring male characters doesn't make you misogynistic, just like preferring female characters doesn't make you a misandrist.

[identity profile] liyosa.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually steam it until it's nice and slimy.

Mmmmmm the texture of slimy okra going down your throat. It's almost like you're having oral tentacle sex!

*gets shot*

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)

Don't feel bad, Anon. You have all the right to write whatever you like, for whatever reasons you have.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
aw, OP, I'm sorry. ♥

(as far as I'm concerned, there's no problem with focusing on the dudes as long as you're not actively hating on the ladies!)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god OP...a) you need a hug. b) You need to get over worrying about how other people react to your fantasies, because if they're healthy for you and you need them to help you deal? Then go for it. I'm sick of hearing that "not writing X or Y type of character" is an automatically bad thing. YOU are part of a marginalized group, and it sounds like what you are doing is empowering. Any SJ idiots who make you feel bad about this can fuck off.

[identity profile] hector-rashbaum.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better, OP, I do the same thing for the same reasons.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I could have written this secret (except it's not the only reason I'm in fandom). I have only written male characters in my original fic so far. I am more comfortable writing them for all of the reasons that you listed, especially the living vicariously part.

I hope no one is giving you a hard time for this, because it's a simple matter of preference. Just keep doing what makes you happy ♥

[identity profile] akai_senshi.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should see a therapist for the gender issues, OP. It'd help all around.

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's not wrong to write about the characters you like and identify with. The more outspoken LJ feminists might not want to read it, but there's also plenty of people who would read it. Fandom is a fantasy space, and if it helps you to write male characters, then by all means, scribble away.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think the marginalization of female characters is an important issue; but that doesn't mean that I, personally, necessarily have a strong interest in most female characters. I tend to like and relate to female characters as children; outside of that, I don't usually relate to them, and attempting to is not only uninteresting, but often uncomfortable.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I say do what you want. As long as you don't attack anyone else, just have fun with it, and enjoy yourself.
