I adored the GOOD Ruby. She will forever be my favourite SPN character.

It's on the CW, though. They run on a different quality level than what the rest of TV thinks about. I wouldn't be worried. Among the CW lineup, Supernatural deserves its place.

Yes, or they used to. I'd take anything American soaps were producing 20-30 years ago over anything SPN has ever shat out.

Soaps serve a very important role in television though.

They're a great breeding ground for actors, and provide many of them with a steady income. There's plenty of big stars that started on soaps. Not to mention they keep massive production crews in work.

They're designed for a certain demographic though. You are not it. They're not really designed to be "quality" television in the sense of breaking new ground, or doing the sorts of things that lead to critical acclaim, but they are a tradition of broadcasting that have been around for almost a century.

They are designed to be that way, because that's what the audience wants. The problem is even though they have a decent following, it's still more profitable for local affliates to run infomercials instead, and if local affliates aren't going to carry the soaps, there's no money to be made in producing them.
