I thought the actual subject matter sounded neat, but Binns was a just plain terrible teacher. He apparently managed to suck the excitement out of goddamn magical wars; that takes talent. The method of transmitting the information is just as important as the information itself.

Especially for History. I was lucky enough to have a really good teacher for my history class, but that's rare.

I agree. I figured Binns was just a lousy teacher. Possibly because as a ghost he had trouble relating to, well, anybody, plus I imagine he wasn't worried about tenure.

(OK, they don't have tenure at Hogwarts but you know what I mean...)

I thought that was quite explicitly the point, Binns is so awful that he puts his class to sleep before they can realize how awesome it is. It also works as a narrative device; it keeps that world mysterious and lets Hermione explain new information to the boys when the plot requires without it feeling super forced. It also serves to show some of Dumbledore's flaws from the beginning.
